He appeared to us like the full moon at its rising,
He seemed to us like the full moon rising,
Complaining of a gazelle that persisted in spurning him.
Complaining of a languid gazelle and her disobedience,
ياoh عَجَباًwhat a wonder وَالدَهرand time فيin طُروقِهِits visitations
يا عَجَباً وَالدَهر في طُروقِهِ
مِنat عاشِقٍa lover أَحسَنmore beautiful منthan مَعشوقِهِhis beloved
مِن عاشِقٍ أَحسَن من مَعشوقِهِ
What a marvel, amid time's visitations:
How strange is time in its deceptions,
A lover fairer than his beloved!
That the lover proves fairer than the beloved.
