مَشيبٌ بِهِ ثَوبُ الرَشادِ قَئيب
Gray hair has overtaken him—if only gray hair would endure!
If only this whiteness of the temples would last,
Gray hair, with which the robe of good sense is [fresh?].
The signs of guidance in the garb of old age are few.

Fresh—yet a man grows threadbare with it,
Old yet one creates at that age
And encounters many kinds of companionship while doubtful.
The comfort of company while still unsure,

Doubtful whenever he is asked, "Do you remember the gazelles?"
Unsure, when asked: "Do you recall the past,
And my memories beside al-Janibayn are sweet.
And the pact by both sides being good?

Sweet—and recounting them is like a captivating one's visit
Good - and the counting is like an amazed lover's
To his lover; a visit from him is wondrous.
Bracelet for his lover, and the counting is strange.

Wondrous—and how many, for his visit in the darkness,
Strange - and how many hearts has her nightfall,
Ailing hearts—or might he be a healer?
Made sick or it could be a remedy."

يُناديهِ مَن يَهوى وَلَيسَ يُجيبُ
A healer—yet his beloved is his healer.
A remedy - but for the lover the beloved is the remedy
His lover calls to him, but he does not answer.
The one who loves calls him but he does not answer.

He answers, when he inclines to answer, as one turning away.
Answer - if he turns aside with the response of one who ignores me
So my heart is a well of blood for my eye.
Then my heart bleeds for my eyes with tears.

A well resembling Badr; and its well
Tears - he related a full moon but his heart
Seethed with blood, and the blood poured forth.
Used to boil with blood and blood is pouring.

Pouring - he challenged the one with pottery with his horses
Ali! And where could the appointed heir have a peer?
Is Ali! How can the successor can be checked?

A peer to approach him when battle grows fierce?
Checked - he matches him if the fighting intensifies
And death's arrow strikes wherever he wills.
And the arrow of destruction goes wherever it will hit

It strikes the champions' souls, which
Hit - from among the brave their souls
Repel death's expectations, which fail.
That defy the doubts of death while they fail.

Fail—but when Haydar grew leopard-fierce,
Fail - But when Haydar turned ferocious
Death had a sturdy staff among men.
The wood against the brave became a cross.

Sturdy, as when he brought death to Amr and Marhab;
A cross - that destroyed Amr and Marhab
And that is a broad path in combat.
And that is a vast method in battle.

Broad upon the appointed heir's palm, yet narrow
Vast - in Ali’s grip and narrow
When anyone other than the appointed heir seeks it: he fails.
If other than the successor attempts he fails.

Fails - And repulsion did not bite against its fang
But when it bites, that man is fainthearted.
And if it bites then that would be a drawback.

Fainthearted, though they count him the pick of an army;
Drawback - And even if his enemies are an army elite
And every defiant man is cowardly in combat.
And each mighty in battle is a loser.

Disappears - the striking of his sword
To where no beloved meets the beloved.
To where he does not find the beloved, beloved.

Dear to my heart is Shiism; indeed, it is
The dearest - to my heart is the Shia path, it
A share for everyone born of pure parents.
For all pure parentage has a share.

A share the angels passed as a gift among themselves;
A share - bestowed upon them by angels amongst themselves
And one hostile to Ali is defeated there, despoiled.
And the adversary there is defeated, deprived.

Deprived - Salim for hell, prepared
When the grievous day of resurrection arrives.
When the day of judgement becomes harsh.

Harsh - upon the illegitimate but its branch
Is fresh for the Shia who hold fast.
Upon the adhering Shia is good.

Fresh—while hostility's stem is then dry,
Good - And the illegitimate’s wood when withered
So the fire has a blaze within those bodies.
So for their bodies will be flaming flames.

So sob after sob destroys me.
So perishing me after weeping, weeping.

Sobbing—when Husayn and his killing are mentioned—
Weeping - when said al-Husayn and his killing
Grows, and in my grieving heart there is a throbbing.
Increases and in my sorrowful heart, desolation.

Left corpses and all are strangers.

A stranger in the land of al-Taff, his women taken captive;
Strangers - in the land of Tuwa their women were taken captive
And Zaynab is distraught, and hope is barren.
Zaynab and Layla and intention serious.

Barren—yet time will pass,
Serious - but time will pass
And God's help will come, and it is near.
And God’s victory will come nigh.

Near, like kinship with Ali through allegiance,
Near - as the kinsfolk in Wilaya** to Ali
Through which, whenever I fear sins, I repent.
Through it whenever sins diminish I lament.

Devotional poems opponents will negate.

Unsettle the men of Hashw, since I have subdued them;
Negate - the men of rubbish when I suppressed them
As though I were watching them wherever I might be.
As if over them I am “where was I a watcher?”

A watcher—my sword and my vengeance, through my tongue,
Watcher - and my sword and my revenge in my words
Are two watchers, each listening and answering.
Two watchers, listening and answering.

Answering - so O Kufan! Chant melodiously.
Gray hair has overtaken him—if only gray hair would endure!
If only this whiteness of the temples would last.
