يصدُّ الفَضلُ عَنّا أَيَّ صَدٍّ

يصدُّ الفَضلُ عَنّا أَيَّ صَدٍّ

وَقالَ تَأُخّري عَن ضُعفِ معدَه

وَقالَ تَأُخّري عَن ضُعفِ معدَه

Faḍl—Bounty—rebuffs us: what a rebuff!

Al-Fadl turns away from us—what a rebuff!

He said, “My delay is due to the weakness of the one preparing it.”

And he said, 'My staying away is due to a weak stomach.'

فَقُلتُ لَهُ جعلت العينَ واواً

فَقُلتُ لَهُ جعلت العينَ واواً

فَاِن الضعفَ أَجمَع في المودَّه

فَاِن الضعفَ أَجمَع في المودَّه

I said to him, “You have turned the ʿayn into a wāw—

So I told him, 'I have turned the ʿayn into a wāw,

for all the weakness lies in the prolongation.”

for the weakness lies entirely in affection.'
