اَباO Abu هاشِمٍHashim ماليwhy do I أَراكَI see you عَليلاailing
ترفَّقbe gentle بِنَفسwith the soul of المُكرَماتnoble deeds قَليلاa little
Abu Hashim, why is it that I see you ailing?
O Abu Hashim, why do I see you ailing?
Be gentle awhile with the very soul of noble deeds,
Be gentle awhile with the soul of noble deeds,
لِتَرفَعَso that you may lift عَنfrom قَلبthe heart of النَبِيِّthe Prophet حَزازَةًanguish
وَتَدفَعand drive away عَنfrom صَدرِthe breast of الوَصِيِّthe appointed successor غَليلاburning grief
that you may lift an ache from the Prophet’s heart
so you may lift anguish from the Prophet's heart,
and dispel the burning anguish from the legatee’s breast.
and drive burning grief from the Successor's breast.
فَلَوfor if كانَthere were مِنfrom بَعدafter النَبِيّينthe prophets مُعجزa miracle
لكُنتَthen you would be عَلىof صِدقthe truth of النَبِيِّthe Prophet دَليلاa proof
For had there been, after the prophets, a miracle,
For if there were a miracle after the prophets,
you would have been proof of the Prophet’s truth.
you would be proof of the Prophet's truth.
أَباO Abu هاشِمٍHashim لَمdid not أَرضَbe content with هاتيكَthat دَعوَةًa prayer
وَاِنand even though صَدَرتit came عَنfrom مُخلِصٍa sincere well-wisher مُتَطَوِّلِbestowing favors
Abu Hashim, I did not approve of that invocation,
O Abu Hashim, I was not content with that prayer,
though it came from one sincere, freely offering it.
even though it came from a sincere benefactor.
فَلاfor there is no عَيشَlife ليfor me حَتّىuntil تَدومَyou remain مُسَلَّماًsafe from harm
وَصَرفُand the vicissitudes of اللَياليthe nights عَنfrom ذَراكyour shelter بِمَعزَلِat a distance
For life is no life to me unless you remain unharmed,
For I have no life unless you remain unharmed,
with the nights’ vicissitudes turned far from your precincts.
and the turns of the nights stay far from your shelter.
فَاِنso if نَزَلتdescends يَوماًone day بِجِسمِكَupon your body علَّةٌan illness
وَحاشاكَand may you be spared مِنهاfrom it ياO عَلاءَglory of بَنيthe sons of عَليAli
If ever an illness should descend upon your body—
So if one day an illness descends upon your body,
far be it from you, O glory of the sons of Ali—
—and may you be spared it, O glory of Ali's sons—
فَنادِthen call out بهاto it فيat الحالِthe present moment غَيرَnot مُؤَخَّرٍdelayed

then call out to it at once, without delay:
then call out to it at once, without delay:
“Away from me—turn toward Isma‘il’s body!”
"Move away from me into Ismail's body."
