رَشَأa young gazelle غَداhas become وَجديmy longing عَلَيهِfor him كردفِهlike his haunches
وَغَداand has become اِصطِباريmy patience فيin هَواهُlove for him كَخصرِهِlike his waist
A young gazelle—my longing for him has grown as ample as his haunches,
and my patience in loving him has grown as slender as his waist.
وَكَأَنَّand as though يَومَthe day وِصالِهِunion with him منfrom وجهِهِhis face
وَكَأَنَّand as though لَيلَةthe night هَجرِهِseparation from him منfrom شَعرِهِhis hair
And the day of union with him seems made from his face,
and the night of separation from him seems made from his hair.
إِنif ذُقتُI taste خمراًwine خِلتُهاI fancy it منfrom ريقِهhis saliva
أَوor رمتُI seek مسكاًmusk نِلتُهُI obtain it منfrom نَشرِهِhis fragrance
If I taste wine, I fancy it comes from his saliva;
or if I seek musk, I obtain it from his fragrance.
وَإِذاand when تَكَبَّرhe grows proud وَاِستَطالَand acts haughtily بِحُسنِهِbecause of his beauty
فَعذارthen the down عارِضِهِof his cheek يَقومُserves بِعُذرِهِas his excuse
And when he grows proud and haughty in his beauty,
then the down on his cheek serves as his excuse.
