Where are our days that have passed away,

when we augured union from the most auspicious birds,

and the fellowship I knew among noble people,

which separation's vicissitudes carried so far away?

    رُبّ نَفع أَزالَهُ حُكمُ ضَيرِ

    Time scattered their company after they had gathered;

many a benefit has been undone by harm's decree.

Separation ruled over their hopes, so they lowered

    Numayr's gaze beneath parting's sway.

Love dealt a fatal blow to my forgetting them,

like al-Hajjaj's deadly assault on Ibn Jubayr.

I have no companionship among humankind except with them.

I wonder: do they have anyone there but me?

Whenever mention of them passes by, my heart says:

"May God remember with favor those you have remembered."
