أَأبَاO father of الحُسَينِal-Husayn مُصَغَّراًin diminutive form وَمُكَبَّراand in full form
سِرِّيmy inmost thoughts يُتَرجمspeaks عَنof وَفَاءٍloyalty شَامِلِall-embracing
O Abu al-Husayn, in diminutive and full form,
O Abal-Husayn, diminished and magnified
My inmost thoughts speak of all-embracing loyalty.
My secret is translated from complete loyalty
مَاnot لِيfor me بِمَاin return for what أَولَيتُمُوهُyou bestowed it يَدٌability وَمَنand who
بِلِسَانِwith the tongue of سَحبَانٍSahban لِفَكَّيfor the two jaws of بَاقِلِBaqil
I have no power to repay what you bestowed—and who
What is it to me, what hands have granted you and who
Can give Sahban's tongue to Baqil's jaws?
With the tongue of clouds, to my untying knot
أَودَعتُI entrusted مَجدَكُمُyour glory وَقَدand already وَدَّعتُكُمI bade you farewell
وُدّاًaffection كَمَاjust as حَيَّاكَgreeted you زَهرُblossoms of خَمَائِلِleafy groves
I entrusted to your glory, as I bade you farewell,
I deposited your glory, and I bid you farewell
Affection, as the blossoms of leafy groves greeted you.
With affection, as the flower of chamomile greeted you
وَأَنِستُand I delighted بِالبِرِّin the kindness الَّذِيwhich أَولَيتُمُyou bestowed
أُنسَthe delight of المُتَيَّمِthe lovesick lover بِالرَّقِيبِin the watcher الغَافِلِheedless
And I delighted in the kindness you bestowed,
And I enjoyed the righteousness you granted
As a lovesick lover delights in a heedless watcher.
The enjoyment of the bereaved with the unmindful guardian
وَغَرِقتُand I drowned مِنbecause of خَجَلِيmy embarrassment بِكُمbefore you فِيin لُجّةٍdeep waters
فَلتَجعَلُواso make الإِغضَاءَforbearance عَنِّيtoward me سَائِلِيmy petitioner
And, abashed before you, I drowned in deep waters;
And I drowned in my shyness with you in a swamp
So let your forbearance toward me be my petitioner.
So make overlooking me the questioner’s request
وَشَكَرتُكُمand I thanked you شُكراًwith gratitude يَقُولُsays لِبِّركُمto your kindness
هَذَاthis السِّنَانُthe spearhead لِمِثلِfor the like of ذَاكَthat العَامِلِthe upper spear-shaft
And I thanked you with gratitude that says to your kindness:
And I thanked you with thanks that say to your righteousness
"This spearhead befits a shaft like that."
This is the reward for the likes of that doer
وَرَحَلتُand I departed عَنكُمfrom you والفُؤَادُand the heart لَدَيكُمُwith you
فَلتَعجَبُواso marvel لِيَat me مِنat مُقِيمٍone who stays رَاحِلِone who departs
And I departed from you, while my heart remained with you;
And I departed from you while my heart is with you
So marvel at me: one who stays, yet departs.
So wonder at me, one who has left yet remains
