أَحمَىheated الهَوىlove قَلبَهُhis heart وَأَوقَدand kindled
فَهوَso he عَلَىdespite أَنthat يَموتَhe is dying أَوقَدmore aflame
Love heated his heart and set it ablaze;
Love inflamed his heart and set it ablaze
so, though he is dying, he burns still fiercer.
So he is bent on dying inflamed
وَقالَand said عَنهُof him العَذولُthe reproacher سالٍno longer in love
قَلَّدَهُmay He burden him with اللَّهُGod ماwhat تَقَلَّدhe took upon himself
And the reproacher said of him, “He loves no longer.”
Of him the censurers prattle vainly
May God burden him with what he has taken upon himself!
God decked him out as he adorned himself
وَبِاللوىand at al-Liwā شَادِنٌa fawn عَلَيهِupon him
جيدُthe neck of غَزالٍa gazelle وَوَجهُand the face of فَرقَدFarqad (a star)
And at al-Liwā is a fawn who bears
His looks enhanced by the curve of his neck
a gazelle’s neck and the face of Farqad.
The cheek of a graceful gazelle, a sleeper’s face
أَسكَرَهُintoxicated him ريقُهُhis saliva بِخَمرٍwith wine
حَتّىuntil اِنتَشَىgrew tipsy طَرفُهُhis gaze فَعَربَدthen ran riot
His saliva intoxicated him with wine,
His saliva intoxicated me with wine
until his gaze grew tipsy and ran riot.
So that my eyes squinted as if grasping shadows
لاdo not تَعجَبواmarvel لانهِزامِat the defeat of طَرفيmy gaze
فَجَيشُfor the army أَجفانِهِof his eyelids مُؤَيَّدreinforced
Do not marvel at my gaze’s defeat,
Be not astonished at my eyes’ defeat
for the army of his eyelids is reinforced.
For his eyelashes’ army comes well supported
أَناI لَهُto him كَالَّذِيlike what تَمَنَّىhe wished
عَبدٌa slave نَعَمyes عَبدُهُhis slave وَأَزيَدand more
I am to him just what he wished:
I am to him as one who pined
a slave—yes, his slave, and more.
A slave, yes and more servile
لَهُdue to him عَلَيَّincumbent upon me اِمتِثَالُobedience to أَمرٍa command
وَليand due to me عَلَيهِincumbent upon him الحَفاءُbarefootedness (likely intended: coldness) وَالصَّدand rejection
His due from me is obedience to his command;
He has over me obedience to command
and my due from him is coldness and rejection.
I have over him protection and support

If his eye invokes God’s name to kill me,
If his eyes shoot me dead with a glance
my heart sends blessings upon Muhammad.
My heart prays blessings on Muhammad
