أَغارَmade jealous الغَيثَthe rain كَفُّكَyour hand حينَwhen جاداit poured generously
فَأَفرَطَso it went to excess فيin تَرادُفِهِits successive showers وَزاداand increased
Your hand made the rain jealous when it poured,
So it poured to excess in ever-increasing showers.
أَظُنُّI think السُحبَthe clouds تَحسُدُناenvy us عَليهِfor it
فَتَمنَعُso they prevent مِنfrom زِيارَتِكَvisiting you العِبادَthe people
I think the clouds envy us for it,
And so keep people from visiting you.
ثَناناit kept us back عَنكَfrom you فَاِزدَدناso we increased ثَناءًin praise
عَلىof عَلياكَyour exalted rank لاnot نَألوwe spare اِجتِهاداeffort
It kept us from you, so we increased our praise
Of your exalted rank, sparing no effort.
فَأَغضَبَناso it angered us وَإِنand though أَرضىit pleased البَراياhumankind
وَأَظمَأناand it made us thirsty وَإِنand though رَوّىit watered البِلاداthe lands
So it angered us, though it pleased humankind,
And made us thirsty, though it watered the lands.
وَكَمand how often عَنَّفتُهُI rebuked it فيfor قَطعِsevering حَبليmy cord
وَإِنand though وَصَلَit favored الأَنامَhumankind فَماbut not أَفاداit availed
And how often I rebuked it for severing my cord—
Though it favored humankind—but to no avail.
فَيَضحَكُso it laughs حينَwhen أوهِمُهُI mislead it وَيَبكيand weeps
فَيوهِمُنيso it makes me imagine الخَديعَةَdeceit وَالوَداداand affection
So it laughs when I mislead it, and weeps,
Making me imagine both deceit and affection.
وَأَعجَبُand I marvel لِاِبتِسامِat the smile of البَرقِthe lightning فيهِwithin it
وَقَدwhile already لَبِسَتhave donned سَحائِبُهُits clouds حِداداmourning black
And I marvel at the lightning's smile within it,
While its clouds have donned mourning black.
فَظَلَّتso it kept تَحسُدُenvying الأَوراقَthe pages عَينيmy eye
وَقَدand already أَرسَلتُهاI had sent them تَشكوcomplaining of البُعاداseparation
So my eye kept envying the pages,
Which I had sent to lament the separation.
وَلَوand if أَنّيthat I اِستَطَعتُI were able وَقَدwhile already حَمَلناwe carried
بَياضَthe whiteness of الطِرسِthe page نَحوَكَtoward you وَالسَواداand the black ink
And had I been able, as we carried
The page's whiteness and black ink toward you,
لَصَيَّرتُI would have made البَياضَthe white لَهاfor it سِجِلّاًa scroll
وَصَيَّرتُand I would have made السَوادَthe black لَهاfor it سَواداblack ink
I would have made the white a scroll for it,
And made the black its ink.
