Your hand made the rain jealous when it gave generously,

so it poured in excessive succession, and increased still more.

clouds whose recurring showers I had never known.

but strengthened our faith in you.

through excessive rain, or be called generous?

yet he sways when the breeze of praise stirs him.

He renews his bounty, time after time,

while his understanding rejects repeated words.

A reed pen is wielded by his right hand,

with which he terrified foes and guarded the lands.

and a running that taught fine steeds to run.

It is a wrist to the arm of glory,

and a fire-striker when war's fire is kindled.

It shows us the white faces of hope

when its lips spew forth blackness.

It thinks, when it mounts five slender fingers,

that, thus equipped, it has climbed seven mighty heavens.

Nor have I seen its heart as a slender pen,

serving as a pillar to a house of nobility.

You gave its lofty office greater soundness,

while others were merely stopgaps born of need.

With bounty that puts the morning clouds to shame,

and words that split hard, unyielding rocks.

to court affection from your noble bounty.

yet I hope to be granted more.

your admirer a reply to it, out of regard.

Your acceptance will spare me an answer

that, when recited, would diminish me and itself gain stature.

So I shall never cease thanking you for bounty

    newly bestowed, or lamenting separation.
