تَنَزُّهُkeeping clear عَتبيmy reproach عَنfrom خَطاكَyour fault صَوابُright
وَصَمتِيَand my silence عَنfrom رَدِّreturning الجَوابِthe reply جَوابُa reply
Withholding my reproach for your fault is right;
And my silence, rather than replying, is a reply.
وَماand not كُلُّevery ذَنبٍoffense يَحسُنُis fitting الصَفحُpardon عِندَهُin its case
أَلاindeed رُبَّmany an ذَنبٍoffense لَيسَthere is no مِنهُfrom it مَتابُrepentance
Not every offense is fittingly met with pardon;
Indeed, many an offense admits no repentance.
أَفيis it in كُلِّevery يَومٍday ليfor me إِلَيكَto you رَسائِلٌletters
وَفيand at كُلِّevery طورٍturn وَقفَةٌa pause وَعِتابُand reproach
Must I send you letters every day,
And at every turn, a pause and a reproach?
أُعَلِّلُI soothe رَوحيmy soul بِالوُرودِwith reaching water عَلىamid الظَماthirst
وَأَطمِعُهاand give it hope بِالماءِwith water وَهُوَthough it is سَرابُa mirage
I soothe my thirsty soul with hopes of reaching water,
And give it hope of water, though it is a mirage.
أَتَجعَلُdo you make غَيريsomeone other than me فيin هَواكَyour love مُماثِليmy equal
وَماand not كُلُّevery أَعلاقِprized specimens الخُيولِof horses سَكابُSakab
Do you make another my equal in your love,
Though not every prized horse is Sakab?
إِذاif كَدَّرَتmuddied وِرديmy drinking water الأُسودُthe lions أَبَيتُهُI refused it
فَكَيفَthen how إِذاif ماemphatic particle كَدَّرَتهُmuddied it كِلابُdogs
If lions muddy my drinking water, I refuse it;
What, then, if dogs muddy it?
وَماand there is no فيهِin it مِنany عَيبٍdisgrace عَليَّupon me وَإِنَّماbut rather
عَليكَupon you بِهَذاfor this لاnot عَليَّupon me يُعابُblame is laid
There is no disgrace in this for me; rather,
The blame for this falls on you, not on me.
أَبىrefused اللَهُGod أَنthat أَلقىI meet قَبيحَكَyour foul conduct بِالرِضىwith approval
فَصَبريso my patience عَلىwith ذاكَthat المُصابِthe affliction مُصابُan affliction
God will not have me greet your foul conduct with approval;
So my patience with that affliction is itself an affliction.
إِذاif اِختَلَّfalters وُدُّaffection الخِلِّof the close friend مِنfor غَيرِno موجِبٍjustifying cause
فَليthen I have نَحوَtoward أَهلِpeople of الوُدِّaffection مِنهُfrom him ذَهابُa departure
If a close friend's affection falters without good cause,
Then I can leave him for those who offer affection.
وَكانَand was غَراميmy ardent love فيكَfor you إِذwhen كُنتَyou were وامِقاًloving
بِصَونيby guarding me كَماjust as صانَguarded الحُسامُthe sword قِرابُa scabbard
And I loved you ardently when you were affectionate,
Guarding me as a scabbard guards a sword.
وَقَدرُكَand your standing ماemphatic particle بَينَamong الأَنامِmankind مُمَنَّعاًwell guarded
لَكَfor you العِزُّhonor ثَوبٌa robe وَالحَياءُand modesty نِقابُa face veil
And your standing among mankind was well guarded:
Honor was your robe, and modesty your veil.
وَماand there was no بَينَناbetween us سِترٌa screen يُراعىis respected سِوىexcept التُقىpiety
وَلاand no دونَناin our way إِلّاexcept العَفافُchastity حِجابُa veil
And no screen between us was respected except piety,
And no veil barred our way except chastity.
فَكَيفَhow then وَقَدand already أَصبَحتَyou have become فيamong الحَيِّthe tribe مُهمَلاًleft unguarded
لِكُلِّfor every مُريدٍseeker نَحوَtoward وَصلِكَunion with you بابُa door
How, then, now that you are left unguarded among the tribe,
With a door to union with you for every seeker?
فَلاso do not تَدعُنيinvite me لِلقُربِto closeness مِنكَto you جَهالَةًout of ignorance
فَماfor not كُلُّevery داعٍcaller فيamong الأَنامِmankind يُجابُis answered
So do not, in ignorance, invite me to draw near you;
For not every caller among mankind is answered.

And there shall be no parting while I can prevent it; but if there is
Parting in any circumstance, there shall be no return.
