مَن لَم تَرَ الحِلَّةَ الفَيحاءَ مُقلَتُهُ

مَن لَم تَرَ الحِلَّةَ الفَيحاءَ مُقلَتُهُ

فَإِنَّهُ في اِنقِضاءِ العُمرِ مَغبونُ

فَإِنَّهُ في اِنقِضاءِ العُمرِ مَغبونُ

Whoever's eye has not seen spacious al-Hillah

Is surely cheated when his life comes to an end.

أَرضٌ بِها سائِرُ الأَهوالِ قَد جُمِعَت

أَرضٌ بِها سائِرُ الأَهوالِ قَد جُمِعَت

كَما تَجَمَّعَ فيها الضَبُّ وَالنونُ

كَما تَجَمَّعَ فيها الضَبُّ وَالنونُ

A land where all terrors have been gathered,

Just as the lizard and the fish have come together there.

فَالغُدرُ طافِحَةٌ وَالريحُ نافِحَةٌ

فَالغُدرُ طافِحَةٌ وَالريحُ نافِحَةٌ

وَالوُرقُ صادِحَةٌ وَالطَلُّ مَوضونُ

وَالوُرقُ صادِحَةٌ وَالطَلُّ مَوضونُ

For the pools brim over, and the wind blows,

And the gray doves sing, and the dew is woven.

ما شانَها غِيرُ بَغيِ الجاهِلينَ بِها

ما شانَها غِيرُ بَغيِ الجاهِلينَ بِها

كَأَنَّها جَنَّةٌ فيها شَياطينُ

كَأَنَّها جَنَّةٌ فيها شَياطينُ

Nothing mars it but the wrongdoing of the ignorant within it,

As though it were a paradise with devils in it.
