Whenever the beauties of your person appear before me,

my heart demands its due of me, while my patience puts me off.

So I hold back: no dear friend can take your place

with me, nor is there a promise on which my excuse can rest.

But if sundering Time grants me nearness to you,

and mends what the hand of separation has ruined,

I shall avenge Time upon every spiteful foe

who says that treachery is among Time’s traits.
