شَرِبنا سُلافاً بِلا آنِيَه

شَرِبنا سُلافاً بِلا آنِيَه

فَلا تَحسَبوا عَينَها آنِيَه

فَلا تَحسَبوا عَينَها آنِيَه

We drank pure wine without vessels;

We drank pure wine without cups

so do not think its spring is scalding.

Don’t think her eyes are cups

لَنا نَشوَةٌ في الدُجى ناشِيَه

لَنا نَشوَةٌ في الدُجى ناشِيَه

بِإِدراكِها أَصلَحَت شانِيَه

بِإِدراكِها أَصلَحَت شانِيَه

For us, an ecstasy arises in the darkness;

We have delight in the darkness coming

through attaining it, my affairs were put right.

With her realization, she reformed my condition

تَرى ظِلَّها في ال

تَرى ظِلَّها في ال

ضُحى وَالمَقيلِ

ضُحى وَالمَقيلِ

You see its shade in the

You see her shadow at dawn and dusk

forenoon and at the midday rest,

More settled

أَشَدَّ وِطاءً

أَشَدَّ وِطاءً

وَأَقوَمَ قيلِ

وَأَقوَمَ قيلِ

firmer underfoot

And upright saying

and more upright in speech.

And she threw at the opponent

وَأَلقَت عَلى الضِد

وَأَلقَت عَلى الضِد

دِ قَولاً ثَقيل

دِ قَولاً ثَقيل

And it laid upon the oppo-

A heavy saying

nent a weighty word.

So she was guiding for our souls

فَكانَت لَأَنفُسِنا هادِيَه

فَكانَت لَأَنفُسِنا هادِيَه

وَلَكِنَّها لِلعِدى داهِيَه

وَلَكِنَّها لِلعِدى داهِيَه

So it was a guide to our souls,

But for the enemy misleading

but for foes it was a calamity.

She appeared to us so we unpacked love

تَبَدَّت لَنا فَ

تَبَدَّت لَنا فَ

حَلَلنا الحُبى

حَلَلنا الحُبى

It appeared to us, so

And we said to her welcome

we loosened our knee-bands.

With a sun that rose before the disappearance of shame

وَقُلنا لَها مَر

وَقُلنا لَها مَر

حَباً مَرحَبا

حَباً مَرحَبا

And we said to it, “Wel-

And I saw her clear lights

come, welcome

So I made remembering her lasting

بِشَمسٍ بَدَت قَب

بِشَمسٍ بَدَت قَب

لَ رَفعِ الخِبا

لَ رَفعِ الخِبا

to a sun that appeared be-

People saw her

fore the tent was raised!”

With the eye of hearts

وَشاهَدتُ أَنوارَها بادِيَه

وَشاهَدتُ أَنوارَها بادِيَه

فَصَيَّرتُ تَذكارَها دابِيَه

فَصَيَّرتُ تَذكارَها دابِيَه

And I saw its lights manifest,

So existence yielded

so I made remembrance of it my habit.

To them necessarily

رَآها أُناسٌ

رَآها أُناسٌ

بِعَينِ القُلوبِ

بِعَينِ القُلوبِ

Some people saw it

And the rains of the unseen poured

with the eye of their hearts;

Upon them copiously

فَدانَ الوُجودُ

فَدانَ الوُجودُ

لَهُم بِالوُجوبِ

لَهُم بِالوُجوبِ

so existence yielded

Her clouds over them determined

to them of necessity.

And none but them knew what she was

وَسَحَّت عَلَيهِم

وَسَحَّت عَلَيهِم

غُيوثُ الغُيوبِ

غُيوثُ الغُيوبِ

And down upon them poured

So we understood through her the symbol of the secret of existence

the rains of the unseen;

For the triumph of minds

عَلَيهِم سَحائِبُها هامِيَه

عَلَيهِم سَحائِبُها هامِيَه

وَلَم يَدرِ غَيرُهُمُ ما هِيَه

وَلَم يَدرِ غَيرُهُمُ ما هِيَه

its clouds poured down upon them,

By solving problems

and none but they knew what it was.

So I stood for her with loyalty to pacts

فَهِمنا بِها رَم

فَهِمنا بِها رَم

زَ سِرِّ الوُجودِ

زَ سِرِّ الوُجودِ

We understood through it the sym-

And she was negating our passions

bol of the secret of existence,

Despite that she is a fleeting pleasure

لِفَوزِ العُقولِ

لِفَوزِ العُقولِ

بِحَلِّ العُقودِ

بِحَلِّ العُقودِ

for the intellects to triumph

We saw supplication

by untying the knots.

Being answered through her

فَقُمتُ لَها بِ

فَقُمتُ لَها بِ

وَفاءِ العُهودِ

وَفاءِ العُهودِ

So for it I undertook

And how many veils are there

the fulfillment of the covenants.

Below her sights

فَكانَت لِشَهواتِنا نافِيَه

فَكانَت لِشَهواتِنا نافِيَه

عَلى أَنَّها لَذَّةٌ فانِيَه

عَلى أَنَّها لَذَّةٌ فانِيَه

So it banished our desires,

And we witnessed the unseen a wonder

though it is a fleeting pleasure.

So we lived through her a contented life

رَأَينا الدُعاءَ

رَأَينا الدُعاءَ

لَدَيها يُجاب

لَدَيها يُجاب

We saw that supplication

And the lion of our realities prowling

was answered in its presence;

وَكَم دونَ أَبصا

وَكَم دونَ أَبصا

رِها مِن حِجاب

رِها مِن حِجاب

and how many, before behold-

ing it, were veils!

وَأَشهَدنا الغَي

وَأَشهَدنا الغَي

بُ شَيئاً عُجاب

بُ شَيئاً عُجاب

And we were shown by the un-

seen something wondrous.

فَعِشنا بِها عيشَةً راضِيَه

فَعِشنا بِها عيشَةً راضِيَه

وَأُسدُ حَقائِقِنا ضارِيَه

وَأُسدُ حَقائِقِنا ضارِيَه

So through it we lived a contented life,

and the lions of our truths were fierce.
