    The waterskins of my teardrops never freeze—

    how could they, when the fire of my longing never dies?

    Separation has endured, and I still bear

    tears that melt and a sigh that blazes.

    أَعيا الأُساةَ وَمَلَّ عَنهُ القُوَّدُ

    An illness has encamped forever within the heart;

    it has baffled the healers, and the guides have tired of it.

    Let me die counting the dwellers of the sanctuary,

    in my longing—how hard I strive to endure!

    O home of the loved ones, may rain lavishly water your dwelling!

    And the dust of your dwelling is antimony kohl for the eyes.

    Before visiting you, I must wade through death's deep waters,

    while brown spears are leveled and broad swords unsheathed.

    Ruined campsites of ours in al-Jamiʿayn: unrecognizable now,

    since their abandonment, are their landmarks and familiar haunt.

    فَالقَلبُ يَبلى وَالهَوى يَتَجَدَّدُ

    Time effaced their freshness with the hand of decay;

    so the heart wears away, while love is renewed.

    سَكِروا بِها فَغَدا الزَمانُ يُعَربِدُ

    The cup of death passed round among their dwellers;

    they grew drunk on it, and Time turned drunkenly riotous.

    وَقَضى الزَمانُ بِبَينِهِم فَتَبَدَّدوا

    Distance called for their parting, and they dispersed;

    Time decreed their separation, and they scattered.

    And upon them, from treacherous Time, rained down

    calamities with the upper hand over the hands of Time.

    An age blameworthy in both its states: in it there is no

    thing to praise save the generosity of Ibn Artuq.

    The people continue to ride through him to the heights,

    and Time spends the night sleepless because of him.

    سَيفٌ بِهِ الدينُ الحَنيفُ مُقَلَّدُ

    A coat of mail in which the mighty king is armored;

    a sword with which the upright faith is girded.

    قاضي المَنالِ وَرِفدُهُ لا يَبعُدُ

    His bounty is near at hand, yet his station cannot be reached;

    he fulfills wishes, and his bounty is never far.

    Steady rains of blood pour from his swords

    at times, while gold rains down from his hands.

    With his justice he warded calamities off humankind,

    and tended the people with an eye that never sleeps.

    فَجَنابُهُ لِذَوي المَطالِبِ مَقصَدُ

    Leave all others and seek refuge at the Kaaba of his generosity;

    for his precinct is the destination of those with petitions.

    Remain in the heaven of kingship, O star of the heights!

    Indeed, the people are slaves to the generosity of your hand.

    You managed the affairs of the Muslims, so they were decked

    by your bounty with the neck-rings of doves, and they sang.

    ماءُ المَنونِ بِمَتنِهِ يَتَجَعَّدُ

    You healed the recesses of breasts with a keen sword;

    on its flat the water of death ripples.

    Death's ants crept along its edges,

    and doom coursed back and forth along its edge.

    A summoner: when one day it stands to preach,

    then heads bow, and skulls fall prostrate.

    Bloodied at its striking edges—if you reflected its radiance

    over the mountains, the hard rock would melt from it.

    The world submitted to him, so the look upon her face

    is cheerful, and Time's cheek is rosy because of him.

    فَعَليكَ تَغبِطُها السَماءُ وَتَحمِدُ

    The lands were leveled by you when you alighted upon them;

    so Heaven envies them for having you, and gives praise.

    فَلَها عَلَينا مِنَّةٌ لا تُجحَدُ

    The mounts swiftly brought us near to you;

    so they have done us a favor that cannot be denied.

    فَرَجَعتُ عَنهُ وَالوَرى لي حُسَّدُ

    I approached your dwelling while enemies gloated;

    then I returned from it with all humankind envying me.

    Tread upon the crown of glory, and remain sovereign,

    forever, while Time loosens and binds through you.
