  1. قَدِ اِرتَدى ذَيلَ الظَلامِ الأَشيَبِ

    وَالصُبحُ مِثلُ الماءِ تَحتَ الطُحلُبِ

    The tail of the gray darkness has been worn

    And the dawn is like water under algae

  2. بِأَجرَدٍ مِلءِ الحِزامِ سَلهَبِ

    مُختَبَرٍ كَالبَطَلِ المُجَرَّبِ

    With a bare landscape full of flames

    A laboratory like a seasoned hero

  3. مِثَقَّلِ الكَفِّ بِبازٍ أَشهَبِ

    مُنتَصِبِ القامَةِ سامي المِكنَبِ

    Whose hand is burdened with a gray falcon

    Of erect stature and lofty platform

  4. غَليظِ خَطِّ الجُؤجُؤِ المُنَكَّبِ

    ذي عُنُقٍ خَصبٍ وَرَأسٍ أَجذَبِ

    With thick lines of bending eyebrows

    Having a fertile neck and alluring head

  5. قَصيرِ عَظمِ الساقِ ثَبتِ الرُكَبِ

    قَليلِ ريشِ الصَفحَتَينِ أَرعَبِ

    Short leg bones, steady heels

    With little feathers on both wings, frightening

  6. تامِ الجَناحَينِ قَصيرِ الذَنبِ

    عُيونُهُ مِثلُ الجُمانِ المُذهَبِ

    With complete wings and short tail

    Its eyes like gilded pearls

  7. قَد بُدِّلَت مِن سَبَجٍ بِكَهرَبِ

    مُحَدَّدِ المِنسَر شينِ المِخلَبِ

    Changed from long-tailed to short-tailed

    With a sharp beak and gripping talons

  8. يَنهَشُ في السَبقِ وَإِن لَم يَشغَبِ

    حَتفِ الحُبارى وَعِقالِ الأَرنَبِ

    It snatches in the race even if undisturbed

    The burrows of jerboas and rabbits’ anklets

  9. لا يَرقَبُ النَجدَةَ مِن مُدَرَّبِ

    إِذا الصُقورُ أُنجِدَت بِالأَكلُبِ

    It does not heed the rescue of the trained one

    When eagles are helped by dogs

  10. مُهَذَّبِ الخُلقِ قَليلِ الغَضَبِ

    يَرتاحُ لِلعَودِ وَإِن لَم يُطلَبِ

    Well-mannered, seldom angry

    It rests on the perch even if not asked

  11. كَفاضِلٍ حاوَلَ حِفظَ المَنصِبِ

    زَرَّت بِهِ الطَيرُ بِمَوجٍ مُعشِبِ

    Like the virtuous who tried to keep his position

    The birds annoyed it in a blooming wave

  12. فَحالَ بَينَ رَعيِها وَالمَشرَبِ

    وَظَلَّ كَالساعي الجَريءِ المُذئِبِ

    And it came between their pasture and drinking place

    Remaining like the bold young wolf

  13. يُجَدِّلُ الأَبعَدَ قَبلَ الأَقرَبِ

    لَو أَنَّهُ مَرَّ بِعِنقا مُغرِبِ

    Debating the further before the nearer

    If it passed by a western neck

  14. لَم تُحمَ مِن مَشرِقِها بِالمَغرِبِ

    مُكَذِّباً فيها مَقالَ العَرَبِ

    Its east would not be protected from its west

    Belying in it the Arabs' saying
