قالَsaid لَناto us الديكُthe rooster حينَwhen صَوَّتcrowed
وَالجَفنُand the eyelid بِالغُمضِin sleep قَدalready تَفَوَّتwas lost
The rooster said to us when he crowed,
The cock crowed as he sang his tune
And the eyelid was already lost in sleep,
While eyes still heavy with sleep
وَالغُصنُand the branch بِالزَهرِwith blossoms قَدhad تَجَلّىgrown resplendent
وَالأَرضُand the earth بِالقَطرِwith rain قَدhad تَرَوَّتdrunk its fill
And the branch had grown resplendent with blossoms,
And branches adorned with flowers
And the earth had drunk its fill of rain:
As the earth quenched its thirst with drops of rain
ياO حَيفَpity مَنwhoever فيin الصَباحِthe morning أَغفىdozes off
وَغَبنَand loss مَنwhoever لِلصَبوحِfor the morning draught فَوَّتlet slip
Alas for whoever dozes off in the morning,
Oh what a pity for one who slumbers in the morn
And what a loss for whoever misses the morning draught!
And what a loss for one who missed the dawn
تَنَبَّهواwake up فَالغُصونُfor the branches سَكرىdrunk
إِذاwhen ثَنَتهاbends them الصَباthe east wind تَلَوَّتthey writhe
Wake up, for the branches are drunk;
Awaken, for the branches are intoxicated
When the east wind bends them, they writhe.
As the morning breeze makes them sway
وَالغَيمُand the cloud رَطبُmoist الأَديمِthe skin جَعدٌcrinkled
كَأَنَّهُas though it were حُلَّةٌa robe تَطَوَّتfolded upon itself
And the cloud is moist-skinned and crinkled,
And the moist clouds, wrinkled garb
As though it were a robe folded upon itself.
As if a robe that has been folded
قومواrise اِشرَبواdrink فَالهُمومُfor cares ضَعفىweak
إِذاwhen تَراخىgrows lax الفَتىthe young man تَقَوَّتthey gain strength
Rise and drink, for cares are weak;
Arise and drink, for worries are but weakness
When a young man grows lax, they gain strength.
When a youth grows lax, they gain in strength
