The reproach of reproachers is wasted on my love for you.

Suppose they reproached me—who is there to listen?

They reproached me; had they been fair to lovers,

they would not have attempted what offers no hope.

They knew that you forsake me, and imagined

that I would therefore be deterred by reproach.

    وَاللَومُ فيهِ ما يَضُرُّ وَيَنفَعُ

    They listed your qualities, so I turned back at their blame;

and in blame there is what harms and what helps.

You tormented through abandonment a lover who has no

longing for anyone but you until death.

A disgrace: love calls him, and he answers it

willingly; passion summons him, and he listens.

An eye sleeps when you forsake me, hoping

to be delighted by your phantom's image in a dream.

The phantom's kindness is to pay a visit, for I

am pleased with the phantom's visit, and content.

How strange he is: generous and fierce, far away

from me, granting me union and withholding it.

Return with kindness, as I have known you, for

no room remains to draw the bow of forced patience.

Under duress I endured my love for you, because

if I do not take refuge in patience, what can I do?

Perhaps Time will restore the days of favor,

or the hours of togetherness will return.

An intercessor with Time is hard to find, and I

seek intercession through no hand but al-Mansur's.

    نَجمٌ لَهُ أُفُقُ المَعالي مَطلَعُ

    A standard for us, whose station is the caliphate;

a star whose rising-place is the horizon of lofty honors.

    رُكنٌ لِدينِ اللَهِ لا يَتَزَعزَعُ

    An arm to which Islam's banner is fastened;

a pillar of God's faith that cannot be shaken.

Powerfully built: when he meets the foes on a battlefield,

the unarmored and the armored among them are alike.

Sweet and bitter, frowning and smiling,

distant and near, slow-moving and growing strong.

Lofty in rank, the world submits to him

willingly, and the rising stars envy him.

His hands were known for generosity, so now

all creatures hope for his gifts.

He marked all creatures with a downpour of his bounty,

copious; the clouds of his generosity are never cut off.

Praise grew fragrant; then his wealth was scattered

by a hand that gathers people together through generosity.

His hands hastened against his foes with a keen sword,

the lightning of death flashing from its gleam.

A keen blade: if ever it rises one day to preach,

then heads prostrate, and skulls bow.

Thirsty from long striking, and indeed

its burning thirst is quenched by nothing but blood.

The winds of death blew fiercely from its edges,

and the four natures spoke within it.

My hand has clung to you, O Abu al-Fath, on whose

    eminence all mankind's victory rests,

knowing that generosity in you is the handiwork

of nature, while in others it is an affectation.

Live in bliss whose shade never shifts,

and in high glory before which Time is humbled and submits.
