    The rain kept me from visiting a rain of bounty,

    whose smile is lightning and whose giving is torrents.

    It grew jealous of his hand and the speech of his mouth

    over a kindness bestowed on us, which it then takes away.

    فَبِرُغمي ذاكَ القَطوعُ الوَصولُ

    It severed contact, then kept pouring down;

    so, to my dismay, that rain both severs and connects.

    Thus, in its deeds, it is faithful, treacherous,

    just, unjust, generous, miserly.

    So it came cheerful yet frowning:

    a pleasing sight, with tears pouring down.

    لَستُ أَدري في حَقِّهِ ما أَقولُ

    So I was torn between praise and blame;

    I do not know what to say of it,

    except that I am ever complaining of it, ever grateful,

    reproachful, excusing, silent, outspoken.
