    وَاِنشَقَّ مِن فَرَحٍ بِكَ الإيوانُ

    The fires died out through the merit of your birth;

and the palace hall split with joy at you.

The assembly hall trembled, and dread seized him—

Anushirwan—at the terror of his vision.

of your appearing by monks and soothsayers.

    Jeremiah and Isaiah praised you,

and they, with Ezekiel, acknowledged your excellence,

for virtues attested by the clouds, and by the

Torah, the Gospel, and the Criterion.

You were born prostrate before God, the Guardian,

and all the worlds rejoiced at your appearing.

Fully formed, no umbilical cord of yours was cut,

as an honor, nor was circumcision performed upon you.

Aminah saw the palaces of Syria when

she gave birth to you, none of their corners hidden from her.

Halimah came, beholding in her son

a mystery whose description bewilders minds.

Ibn Dhi Yazan came to believe in your mission,

secretly, that the Judge might bear witness to your grandfather.

God opened your breast when you were four,

and your brothers saw angels around you.

At five you were granted the shade of a cloud,

whose mass was your canopy in the midday heat.

At seven you passed a monastery, and there bowed

its wall, and the bishop embraced Islam.

Likewise, at twenty-five, there turned away

from you Nastur, his heart full.

Until you completed forty years, and there shone

the sun of prophethood, and the explanation became clear.

Then the missiles of the luminaries pelted their accursed one,

and the idols tumbled down in fear of you.

The earth breathed out peace upon you, as did the

trees, the stones, and the dunes.

The keys to all the treasures came,

but renunciation and spiritual knowledge turned you away from them.

You saw behind you as before you, bearing a seal

before which doubt became direct vision.

willingly; Salman too came offering greetings.

The camels and gazelles began speaking to you,

and the desert lizard, the serpent, and the wolf.

The tree trunk yearned toward your exalted self, offering greetings,

and in your palm the flint glorified God.

The date cluster fell toward you; then you returned it

to a palm made splendid and adorned by it.

The two great trees, when you called, came forward,

    until their branches met.

The army complained to you of the thirst afflicting it,

and your fingertips burst forth with water.

You restored Qatadah's eye after it

had been lost, so that no one could see with it.

The sheep's foreleg told of its hidden poison,

as though that limb of it were a tongue.

You ascended upon al-Buraq's back, passing beyond the

seven layered heavens, as the All-Merciful willed.

The full moon was split, and the morning sun shone

after sunset, with no diminution in it.

And a virtue whose truth humankind has attested,

which no human being can deny:

On earth you were God's shadow, yet there never appeared

your shadow in sunlight, wherever you stood.

Manifestations were superseded by your appearing, after

religions were superseded by the creed of your faith.

For your prophethood, whose worth is exalted,

evidence arose and proof was made clear.

Through you all the prophets sought aid

from their Lord in hardships, that they might be helped.

God took covenants from them on your behalf,

    before the ages bestowed you.

Through you Adam sought God's aid when

defiance and disobedience were ascribed to him.

Through you Noah sought refuge, while with him heaved

the ship's fastenings, when the flood surged high.

Through you Job began beseeching his Lord

to remove affliction, and sorrows passed away.

Through you the Friend invoked God and did not fear

Nimrod, when fires were kindled for him.

Through you Joseph began, in prison, to beseech

the Lord of servants, his heart bewildered.

Through you God's interlocutor, the morning he addressed his Lord,

asked acceptance, and beneficence encompassed him.

Through you the Messiah prayed, and his Lord revived

a dead man whose shrouds had already decayed upon him.

Through you truth became clear after its concealment,

until earth's people and the jinn obeyed you.

Were I to give your description its full due,

speech would be exhausted, and meters fall short.

So upon you be His peace from the Lord of Peace,

    and grace, blessings, and good pleasure;

and upon your family on the path of truth, whenever

    the breeze blows and the branches sway;

and upon your cousin, the inheritor of knowledge, before

    whose mighty onslaught the brave were humbled;

and your brother on the Day of Ghadir, when there shone

    the light of guidance, and peers became brothers;

and upon your companions, who followed

the paths of guidance, and whom the All-Merciful guided,

and bought the gardens through their striving, knowing

that souls have their prices when sold.

O seal of the noble messengers, and opener of the

mighty blessings, you to whom beneficence belongs,

I complain to you of the sins of a soul whose stumbling

is a disposition upon which humankind was formed.

    إِنَّ العَبيدَ يَشينُها العِصيانُ

    So intercede for a servant whose habit is disobedience;

    surely disobedience disgraces servants.

For yours is intercession for those who love you all, when

the Bridge is set up and the Balance suspended.

For he has presented himself for a reward, hoping

that his recompense will be forgiveness.
