قَدindeed أَضحَكَmade laugh الرَوضَthe garden مَدمَعُthe tears of السُحُبِthe clouds
وَتَوَّجَand crowned الزَهرُthe blossoms عاطِلَthe unadorned القُضُبِboughs
The clouds' tears have made the garden laugh,
The rain's tear has made the garden laugh,
and blossoms crowned the bare boughs.
And the flowers crown the idle staff.
وَقَهقَهَand laughed aloud الوَردُthe rose لِلصِباfor youth فَغَدَتand then began
تَملَأُfills فاهُits mouth قُراضَةُfilings of الذَهَبِgold
And the rose laughed aloud in youthful joy; then
The roses chortle for the morning breeze,
gold filings began to fill its mouth.
Their mouths filled with pieces of gold.
وَأَقبَلَتand came بِالرَبيعِaround spring مُحدِقَةًencircling
كَتائِبٌbattalions لاnot تُخِلُّfall short بِالأَدَبِin decorum
And there came, encircling spring,
With spring coming, intent,
battalions that never breach decorum.
Hosts that fail not in manners,
فَغُصنُهاso their bough قائِمٌstanding عَلىon قَدَمٍone foot
وَالكَرمُand the vine جاثٍkneeling لَهُbefore him عَلىon الرُكَبِthe knees
So their bough stands on one foot,
Their branches standing on feet,
and the vine kneels before him on its knees.
And the vines kneeling over knees.
وَالسُحبُand the clouds وافَتarrived أَمامَahead of مَقدَمِهِhis coming
لَهُfor him تَرُشُّsprinkles الطَريقَthe road بِالقُرَبِwith waterskins
And the clouds arrived ahead of his coming,
The clouds reached before its advance,
sprinkling the road for him with waterskins.
Sprinkling its path with wreaths.
وَالأَرضُand the earth مَدَّتspread لِوَطءِfor the tread of مَشيَتِهِhis walk
مَطارِفاًbordered cloaks مِنfrom رِياضِهاits gardens القُشُبِfresh
And the earth spread beneath his footsteps
The land stretched to tread its pace,
bordered cloaks from its fresh gardens.
With meadows of reeds from its yards.
وَالطَلُّand the dew فَوقَover المِياهِthe waters مُنتَثِرٌscattered
فَهوَso it لِكَأسِfor the cup of الغَديرِthe pool كَالحَبَبِlike bubbles
And dew lies scattered over the waters,
Dew scattered over the waters,
so it is like bubbles in the pool's cup.
Like pearls in the cup of the pond.
وَالطَيرُand the birds غَنَّتsang بِمَنطِقٍwith a voice غَرِدٍmelodious
يُغنيsuffices for النَدامىthe drinking companions عَنwithout نَفخَةِthe blowing of القَصَبِreed pipes
And the birds sang with a melodious voice
The birds sang in warbling tones,
that lets drinking companions dispense with a reed flute's breath.
That make the pipers forget their reeds.
وَالقُضبُand the boughs مالَتswayed لِسَجعِهاto their cooing طَرَباًin delight
وَنَحنُand we مِنهاthan they أَحَقُّmore entitled بِالطَرَبِto delight
And the boughs swayed to their cooing in delight,
The staffs swayed, enraptured by their rhymes,
and we have more right than they to delight.
And we more entitled than them to rapture.
فَقُمso rise بِناwith us نَنهَبِlet us plunder السُرورَjoy وَعِشand live

So rise with us; let us plunder joy, and live
So rise with us, let's seize the joy, and live
amid felicitations, with a happy outcome.
In congratulations, for the good turn of fate.

And let us not waste time's opportunity, for you do not
And let not the chance of time go unheeded,
know what the turns of misfortune hold.
For who knows what the days to come hold.
