Take for me a share from Time,
Take from fate a share for me
and seize Fate's heedlessness.
And seize the chance that comes unforeseen

There is no lasting share
Long life is not what fate decrees
of life's pure ease without trouble.
Only joy without sorrow has been

So unveil for me a full-breasted bride,
So bring to me a virgin bride
whom the hand of admixture has not startled.
Whose purity no eye has seen

Her fragrance perfumed the cups,
Her smile makes the wine more sweet
and her light clothed the glass.
Her light shines through crystal sheen

At forenoon she resembles suns,
Like suns in the morn she glows
and beneath the darkness she is a lamp.
At night she's a lamp serene

So sip the wine, O beloved;
Drink deep my love while you still can
indeed, in that there is a lesson:
For in this there is wisdom keen

In gardens where the anemones
In the meadows the anemone
have revealed beauty in its fullness,
Bloomed perfection, beauty supreme

The bulbul rose up, a lover true
so the doves sang above it.
And from the branch did sing and keen

Their blackbird arose as a preacher,
Whenever the nightingale lamented
ascending the pulpit of the trees.
With flowers the branches he did preen

Whenever a nightingale lamented,
Arise, for I see time itself
it dotted the great trees with flowers.
Turn kindly though once cruel and mean

Rise, for I see Time
Its night now gone and dawn appears
doing good after doing harm.
Like gentle eve's caressing sheen

صُبحُهُits morning يُشبِهُresembles المَساevening
Its night has shone, though once
This one wandered, prideful and vain
its morning resembled evening.
But now is tamed, his fires careen

It swaggered in self-admiration; then softened
His glory and might are revealed
its harshness, after being hard.
And with Manṣūr he is seen

Its awe-inspiring glory has appeared,
Near at hand is the victory
and through its Mansur it has triumphed.

مِنfrom أَبيAbu الفَتحِal-Fath يُنتَظَرis awaited
And it saw its imminent victory
A king whose sword makes laughter flow
awaited from Abu al-Fath:
And the enemies' eyes tearful lean
مَلِكٌa king أَضحَكَmade laugh السُيوفthe swords
فَبَكَتso wept أَعيُنُthe eyes of العِدىthe foes
a king who made the swords laugh,
With his sword he sheds heads galore
so the eyes of the foes wept.
And with his hand guidance serene

وَرَوَتand quenched كَفُّهُhis palm الصَدىthirst
His white blades severed noses,
If his noble will summoned fate
and his palm quenched thirst.
Fate would harken and obey unseen

وَيَدٌand a hand تُمطِرُrains النَدىbounty
A keen sword that rains deaths,
His lands are protected and safe
and a hand that rains bounty.
To people a refuge, a screen

If his noble resolve were to call
When hopes are dashed, in him still
upon God's decree and destiny,
Hope and faith are nurtured and glean

an obedient respondent would come to him,
With him joy and death coexist
heeding what he commanded.
Shadow and light he brings to them

His abode has protected the fortresses,
Blessed are his fertile lands
so it is a refuge for people.
There good news makes hearts careen

His generosity exceeds even
with him hope comes true.

In him are hopes and death,
His glory ascends the heights
so he is visited and looked to with hope.
Of glory, nearly touching the sheen

How fine is his fertile abode,
And all people bow before him
where mankind rejoices!
Be they pious or worldly lean

He surpassed al-Khasib in generosity,
The just ruler of the land
and his land rose above Mudar.

His glory has risen, almost
A king whose heart is most generous
ascending the crown of glory.
Who rains mercy without spleen

بَينَbetween راجٍa hopeful one وَمُتَّقيand a fearful one
And toward him the people have become
His heart is supple with wisdom
either hopeful or fearful.
And in war, stone steadfast and keen

The spreader of justice throughout the lands:
If we saw the like of you, oh noble one
the house of Ghazi ibn Artuq.
As rulers in every nation and demesne
مَلِكٌa king صَدرُهُhis breast رَحيبspacious
مِنهُfrom him يُستَمطَرُis asked for المَطَرrain
A king whose breast is broad,
Our poetry would be twice as great
from whom rain is sought.
As the ancients' poems long and lean
قَلبُهُhis heart بِالنُهىwith wisdom قَليبa well
وَهوَand it is يَومَon the day of الوَغىbattle حَجَرa stone
His heart is a well of wisdom,
Pearls of phrase in verse sublime
and on the day of battle it is stone.
That shame odes of great length and sheen

Had we seen, O son of noble men,
Consider well, wise one, how in you
the like of your eminence among dynasties,
Meaning triumphs over form that's terse and lean

pearls of wording drawn from verse,
putting their seven long poems to shame.

هَذِهِthese السَبعَةَseven القِصَرshort ones
So consider, O wise one,
these seven short ones:

لا بِمَعنى بِها ظَهَر
their wording grows sweet in your praise,
not for any meaning that appears in them.
