So long as my heart is held captive by Ali,

How can I live on, when death is swifter for me?

And how can I escape unharmed from an eye whose glances

Are like an unsheathed sword, both its sides laid bare?

O you who, in taking lives with it, have emulated

Your namesake amid the clash of white blades and spears,

Restrain your glances and sheathe Dhu al-Fiqar; there is no

Need for you to hurry in killing lovers.

You have indeed routed the hosts of lovers with it,

In the battle of the gazelle, not the Battle of the Camel.
