فَعَطَّرَتso she perfumed سائِرَall الأَرجاءِthe quarters بِالأَرَجِwith fragrance
She came to see what souls she had left alive,
She came to see what was left of the loves
and perfumed every quarter with fragrance.
And scented all the places with perfume
جَلَتshe revealed عَليناto us مُحَيّاًa face لَوif جَلَتهُshe revealed it لَناto us

She revealed to us a face that, had she shown it to us
She shone upon us, greeting, if she had greeted us
in the darkness of night, would have spared us lamps.
In the darkness of night, it would have sufficed us instead of torches

Beautiful of face—if the beauty within her
Beautiful of face, if beauty were obeyed
bestowed kindness, she would afflict every sorrowing man's temple.
The beautiful one would have ignited the love of everyone who loves

Damask-rose-cheeked, the rose of her cheek is guarded
Rosy cheeked, protected by the spears of love and passion
by a sentinel of arrows of coquetry and deep-black eyes.
Is her rose garden
جازَتshe repaid إِساءَةَthe wrongdoing أَفعاليof my deeds بِمَغفِرَةٍwith forgiveness

فَكانَso it was غُفرانُهاher forgiveness يُغنيmakes needless عَنِthe need for الحِجَجِarguments
She repaid the wrongdoing of my deeds with forgiveness,
She forgave my misdeeds out of forgiveness
so her pardon made arguments needless.
So her forgiveness sufficed me instead of arguments
جارَتshe was cruel لِعِرفانِهاbecause she knew أَنّيthat I المَريضُthe sick one بِهاwith love for her

فَماso there is no عَلَيَّupon me إِذاif أَذنَبتُI sinned مِنany حَرَجِblame
She was cruel, knowing that I was sick with love for her,
She understood that I am her lover
so no blame lies upon me if I sin.
So I have no embarrassment if I make mistakes
جَسَّتshe felt يَديmy hand لِتَرىto see ماwhat بيailed me فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her

She felt my hand to see what ailed me, and I told her:
She touched my hand to see how I am, so I said to her
Stop, for that is burning grief that, but for you, would not have stirred.
Enough, for that touch, if not for you, would not have happened

You shunned me, so I found patience more becoming to me,
She was cold to me, so I saw patience more becoming of me
and silence in love more fitting for me than ceaseless talk.
And silence in love more appropriate for me than chatter

Your glances dealt cruelly with us, without pity,
Your glance at us has been merciless
and love's delight is the tyranny of the coquettish eye.
And the pleasure of love is the injustice of the passionate gazer

Be cruel: I have no relief from your torment of me
Be unjust to me, for I have no relief from your torment
except the hand of King al-Mansur, bringing relief.
Except by the hand of the victorious king granting relief

Generous of hand, his might terrifies Time,
The generosity of the palm that frightens Time with its power
so no limb it encounters is free from trembling.
So do not accompany any part other than the shaking one

His resolve strove for what lofty glory approves,
His ambition wavered to what the most high desire
so the kingdom slumbers, while war lies in swirling dust.
So the kingdom is sleepy while war is burning

The hands of his generous deeds have ravaged his wealth,
His generous hands have gathered around his wealth
so he passes no night with an untroubled eye.
So he does not spend the night in other than a disturbed state

Gifts strive to enrich his treasuries,
The effort of generosity is for its treasures to suffice
until they seem to harbor a kind of obstinacy.
As if, through it, there is abundance similar to floods

The sons of hope pressed swiftly toward him,
The sons of hopes hurried to it
so they thronged toward him with striving and pilgrimages.
And traveled their most to seek it

A dark cloud—when you spy the sword's lightning from his hand,
When you sense the lightning of his sword in his hand
you see it radiant in the palm of a radiant man.
You see it flashing in the hand of the flash

He gathered the fruits of high honor when he sought them,
He harvested the fruits of greatness when he pursued them
with a keen sword never free of slaughter in war.
With a sword that did not fail in war

Death's lance shifted amid his sword-strokes,
Before his strikes, the channel of death wandered
and he kept cutting down souls hitherto untouched.
And he continued to diminish the finest men

Surpass, Abu al-Fath, the utmost bounds of glory, for
A reward, oh Abu Al-Fath, for the peaks of pride, for you
you have confined its seekers to a narrow path.
Have held back its seekers on a difficult path

You grew so mighty that, were you to appear at dawn
You have attained an eminence as though if Dawn cloaked you with it
and say, 'Halt! Do not enter the night,' it would not enter.
And you said "Stop, do not enter the night," it would not have entered

You unsheathed swords of victory whose very steel you are,
You brandished the swords of victory whose essence you are
in a blackness woven from the darkness of battle-dust.
In your rising state from the darkness of conflict, kindled

You mended the fracture of glory, O its true master,
You mended the breaking of greatness, oh descendant of its foundation
with them, and straightened what was crooked in the faith.
Through it you straightened what crookedness existed in religion

Embers of fire—yet among their customary deeds
Embers of fire, but of its traits
is quenching the blaze in the people's breasts.
Is the extinguishing of whatever blaze exists in people's chests

Decisive blades: if you wish to strike, they become a hand,
Devestating when you want to demonstrate violence, be a hand
and if you climb the heights, they become like stairs.
And when you ascend glories, be like a staircase
جَلَوتَyou dispelled كَربَthe distress الوَرىof mankind بِالمَكرُماتِwith generous deeds كَماjust as

You dispelled mankind's distress with generous deeds, just as
You relieved the people’s suffering with generosity like
you dispelled that doom with your radiant appearance.
You relieved the chest illness with the pleasant scene

You made your bounty intervene before any promise,
You made your generosity, without a promise, an obstacle
while another's promise is a strait with no release.
While the promise of others is narrow, unresolved

We came to you, O king of the world and its peerless one,
We came to you, oh king of the world and its only one
making our way with pearls, offering them to the deep seas.
We circulate round pearls and present them to floods

We crossed the lands and sought no young man but you;
We toured the countries and sought no youth but you
whoever gains pearls has no need of jet.
He who gets pearls can do without cheap stones

You have gathered excellence—may you never disperse it;
You gathered such superior virtue that you never divided it
you are peerless, while most people are like the rabble.
You are matchless, while the people are like nomads
