O my lords, after they departed I was burdened

beyond all I had known, beyond my power to bear.

I became like the ringdove, singing your praise,

when your bounty became the collar around my neck.

Indeed, since you have been absent, my five senses

are at the utmost pitch of longing for you.

You are sweet to my eye and my hearing, and to

my touch, my smell, and my taste.

So too, since your departure, my six directions

are filled with the searing pang of longing:

behind me, before me, on my right, and on my—

—left, beneath me, and above me.
