ياO رَبُّLord أَعطِgrant العاشِقينَthe lovers بِصَبرِهِمfor their patience
فيin الخُلدِeternity غاياتِthe utmost degrees النَعيمِbliss المُطلَقِunbounded
O Lord, grant lovers, for their patience,
O Lord, grant the lovers in their patience
in eternity, the utmost of unbounded bliss.
The utmost delights of paradise unending,
وَأَذِقهُمُand let them taste بَردَthe coolness السُرورِjoy فَطالَماfor so long
صَبَرواthey endured عَلىunder حَرِّthe heat الغَرامِpassion المُقلِقِdisquieting
And let them taste the coolness of joy, for so long
And let them taste the coolness of joy, for long
have they endured the disquieting heat of passion,
Have they borne the heat of love so tormenting,
حَتّىso that يَرىmay see الجُبَناءُthe cowardly عَنwith regard to حَملِbearing الهَوىlove
غاياتِthe heights عِزِّهُمُtheir glory الَّتيwhich لَمnot تُلحَقِhave been attained
so that those too cowardly to bear love may see
That cowards may see in the ardors of passion
the heights of their glory, which none have attained.
The heights of glory they cannot attain,
فَيَكونَand so will be أَصغَرُthe lowliest جاهِلٍignorant person حَمَلَhas borne الهَوىlove
يَلهوmakes sport بِأَكبَرِof the greatest عالِمٍscholar لَمnot يَعشَقِhas loved
Then the lowliest ignorant man who has borne love will
So the least fool who bears love's sweet obsession
make sport of the greatest scholar who has never loved.
Makes sport of the wisest who feel no such pain.
