    وَيَدي بِحَبلِ وِصالِكُم تَتَشَبَّثُ

    No trust in any love but yours arises in me;

    and my hand clings to the cord of union with you.

    فَهُوَ القَديمُ وَكُلُّ حُبٍّ مُحدَثُ

    The roots of your love are established in my mind;

    for it is ancient, and every other love is new.

    فَعُقودُها مَنظومَةٌ لا تُنكَثُ

    The vows have turned my reins away from all but you;

    for their bonds are strung together, never broken.

    وَلَظى الهَوى بِضِيائِها يَتَأَرَّثُ

    Our hearts found cool assurance in preserving affection;

    and passion's blaze is kindled by their radiance.

    Love weighs heavily; though savored, it is

    an illness through which bones waste away and crumble.

    A robe: I cast off honor when I put it on,

    for it was then that ardent longing's abasement was bequeathed.

    People slandered my guarded honor—how welcome it would be

    if what the foes said and recounted were true!

    They rose against us; whenever I saw them, I began,

    cautiously, to mention you in masculine and feminine forms.

    May mankind be bereft of my sleepless eye! Send

    a dream-phantom to me—or do not send it.

    لَكِنَّني بِحِبالِكُم أَتَشَبَّثُ

    Love poured forth, and I am drowned in its depths;

    yet I cling to your ropes.

    Love blunted my edge, though I was a sword of Indian steel,

    keen-edged, never lingering in its sheath.

    Then the benefactions of Ibn Artaq became my tale,

    of which everyone among mankind is told.

    Steadfast of heart, he could almost be sent as a messenger,

    were there anyone to be sent after Muhammad.

    وَفَمُ الزَمانِ بِفَضلِهِ مُتَحَدِّثُ

    The mouth of the wilderness smiles with his light;

    and the mouth of Time speaks of his excellence.

    The wide-eyed ones' wounds grew deep at his hands; afterward

    he arrived, the fair ones' faces dusty and disheveled.

    The realm's frontiers would be breached, were he not

    creating all-embracing justice for them and bringing it forth.

    بَحرٌ إِذا عُدَّ النَدى وَالمَبحَثُ

    He is Thahlan when forbearance or wisdom is reckoned;

    an ocean when generosity and inquiry are reckoned.

    وَجَبينُهُ لِلنَيِّرَينِ يُثَلِّثُ

    His right hand's bounty is the price of the seven seas;

    and his brow adds a third to the two luminaries.

    He turns the reins of calamities—a horseman

    who has left the steed of Time panting.

    Calamities lay in fear of his might,

    fallen, and oath-breaking Time was humbled through them.

    Drunk on the tawny wine of generosity, what concerns him is

    wealth to be divided, or sciences to be explored.

    Fruits of glory—toward their harvest he stretched

    a hand playfully bestowing favors.

    You straightened the realm's crooked ways, O star of guidance,

    with spearheads that spit the poison of death.

    Leap to the heights, and command Time, which

    will not delay if you summon it to a crisis.

    We returned to you on lean, white thoroughbred camels,

    bow-like, urged onward to your sanctuary.

    They sped with us, folding up the deserts; and when

    I saw your fire, I said to the caravan, 'Stay.'

    Then we shared in joy, and a share was given

    in our sweet glad tidings to the slow-paced she-camels.

    With confidence that, if the hand of death should leave

    a dead man, he would be revived at your side through noble favors.

    That confidence stood firm; even if it swore that you revive

    souls with your bounty, it would not swear falsely.
