خَليلَيَّmy two friends هُبّاrise, you two كُلَّevery يَومٍday وَليلَةٍand night
وَلاand do not تَطعَماtaste, you two حَتّىuntil الصَباحِmorning كَراكُماyour slumber (both of you)
My two friends, arise—every day and every night;
My two friends, rise each day and night,
and taste no slumber until dawn.
And do not taste your slumber until morning.
فَإِنَّfor indeed لُيَيلاتِlittle nights of الشِتاءِwinter أَنيسَةٌpleasant company
إِذاif نُمتُماyou both sleep قَدalready فازَhas profited فيهاin them سِواكُماothers besides you both
For winter’s dear little nights are delightful company;
For winter's little nights are pleasant company;
if you two sleep, someone else will have enjoyed them.
If you both sleep, others will already have profited from them.
وَقَدand indeed أَمكَنَتhave become available فيin مَجلِسِthe gathering of الشُربِdrinking سِتَّةٌsix things
وَكُلٌّand each عَلىin وُفقِaccord with الصَوابِwhat is right رِضاكُماyour satisfaction (both of you)
Six things are now at hand in the wine gathering,
And six things are at hand in the drinking gathering,
each aptly according with what pleases you both:
And each, as is only right, pleases you both:
شُموعٌcandles وَشَمامٌand fragrant melons وَشادٍand a singer وَشادِنٌand a young gazelle
وَشَهدٌand honeycomb وَشَربٌand drinking companions يَشتَهيlongs أَنto يَراكُماsee you both
candles, fragrant blossoms, a singer, and a gazelle-like youth;
Candles, fragrant melons, a singer, and a young gazelle,
honey, and wine that longs to see you both.
And honeycomb, and drinking companions who long to see you both.
فَلاso do not تَحرِمانيdeprive me, you two مِنكُماfrom you both حُسنَfine صُحبَةٍcompanionship
أَلَذُّI delight بِهاin it إِنّيindeed I مُحِبٌّam fond لِذاكُماof that (addressing you both)
So do not deny me, you two, the pleasure of companionship,
So do not deny me your fine companionship,
in which I delight; for I love that companionship, you two.
In which I delight; indeed, I love just that.
وَإِنand if كانَis هَذاthis العَيشُlife of pleasure مِنfrom غَيرِanyone other than مانِعٍMāniʿ
فَلاthen may not أَحسَنَmake good الرَحمَنُthe Merciful فيهِin it عَزاكُماyour consolation (both of you)
And if this life is free of any hindrance,
And if this life of pleasure comes from anyone but Māniʿ,
may the Merciful never grant you both fair consolation for its loss.
Then may the Merciful grant you both no consolation in it.
