My soul for a wild-ox calf taking shelter in my heart;
With my soul a taproot burrowing in a loving heart
you see him skittish in a friendly guise.
Yet you see it recoiling in the raiment of an intimate
وَأَحوىand dark-hued أَحوَرِblack-eyed with bright whites
الأَحداقِthe eyes أَلمىdark-lipped
And dusky, with contrasting black-and-white
My eyes brim over
eyes and dark lips;
With imaginative tears
تَكادُalmost خُدودُهُhis cheeks
بِالوَهمِfrom mere imagining تَدمىbleed
his cheeks almost
As if all the beauty
bleed from mere imagining.
Had decided to forsake me
كَأَنَّas though الحُسنَbeauty
لَمّاwhen مِنهُfrom him تَمّاreached perfection
As though Beauty,
And chose instead to tend
when it reached perfection through him,
That blossoming garden
وَآثَرَand chose أَنَّthat ذاكَthat
الرَوضَthe garden يُحمىbe protected
and chose to have that
Tomorrow the rose will take root in my cheeks
garden protected,
And the sword of your gaze will stand guard
غَداbecame لِلوَردِfor the roses فيon خَدَّيهِhis two cheeks غارِسa planter
وَظَلَّand remained لَهُfor them بِسَيفِwith the sword of اللَحظِthe glance حارِسa guard
became a planter of roses on his cheeks,
You held up a goblet like the moon
and remained their guard with the sword of his glance.
To greet the brilliant full moon
جَلاdisplayed فيin كَفِّهِhis palm
كَأسَa cup of الحُمَيّاheady wine
He displayed in his palm
And passed the cup around
a cup of heady wine;
Toasting us
فَقابَلَthen met نورُهاits radiance
بَدرَthe full moon of المُحَيّاthe face
then its radiance met
Leaving behind the dead lovers
the full moon of his face.
To join the living
وَطافَand went round بِكَأسِهِwith his cup
فيناamong us وَحَيّاand greeted
And he went round with his cup
A face that glows amidst the lamps
among us and offered greetings,
Becomes the sixth of five bright stars
فَغادَرَthus left مَيِّتَthe dead one of
العُشّاقِthe lovers حَيّاalive
thus leaving the dead
I held up my cup and said
among lovers alive,
This is for you, from me
بِوَجهٍwith a face إِنif تَبَدّىappeared فيin الحَنادِسdeep darkness
غَداbecame لِلنَيِّراتِbeside the luminaries الخَمسِthe five سادِسa sixth
with a face that, if it appeared in deep darkness,
For I have wasted my life
would become a sixth beside the five luminaries.
Lost in yearning
جَلاdisplayed كَأسيmy cup فَقُلتُand I said
إِلَيكَaway with you عَنّيfrom me
He displayed my cup, and I said,
With gentle grace you replied
“Away from me,
Indeed, and I as well!
فَقَدfor indeed ضَيَّعتُI squandered
عُمريmy life بِالتَمَنّيin wishing
for I have squandered
So pour, mix and sing to me
my life in wishing.”
For my poetry graces gatherings
فَقالَthen he said مَعَwith الخَلاعَةِwantonness
إِيyes وَإِنّيand indeed I
Then he said, with wantonness,
It is the fruit of fruits, and of gatherings
“Yes—and I too.”
Did not the one so skilled
فَقُلتُthen I said فُطُفso go round إِذاًthen
وَاِمزُجand mix وَغَنِّand sing
I said, “Then go round,
In the art of beauty say
and mix the wine, and sing
Whoever finds the soft rains
بِشِعريwith my poetry فَهوَfor it is حَضراتُthe assembled presences المَجالِسthe gatherings
وَفاكِهَةُand the fruit of المُفاكِهِthe witty conversationalist وَالمُجالِسand the fellow sitter
my poetry, for it is the company at gatherings,
Let him tether himself and submit
and the fruit of the wit and the companion.”
So here I am under the protection
أَماdid not? قالَsaid الَّذيthe one who

Imad al-Din, who enriches every wretch,
You fulfill my wishes
and for whom lions become prey.
And more wishes besides
أَياO مَلِكاًa king حَمانيwho protected me

O king who protected me
Lowering yourself
from the misfortunes of my times,
To raise my station

Exalting nobility

Those who sought your limit
and noble meanings.
In generosity have strayed
وَلَولاand were it not for أَنتَyou ياO مُرديslayer of الفَوارِسthe horsemen

And were it not for you, O slayer of horsemen,
And those who compared your rain
learning would have been effaced among the people.
To mere showers, have transgressed
تَجَرّاwas presumptuous مَنwhoever لِجودِكَfor your generosity
رامَsought حَدّاa limit
He was presumptuous who, for your generosity,
For how can any measure mete
sought a limit;
The most fine and gentlest?
وَمَنand whoever بِالغَيثِwith rain
قاسَكَcompared you قَدindeed تَعَدّىoverstepped
and whoever with rain
Rain is begged for when withheld
has compared you has overstepped.
It flows not but with darkened mien
وَكَيفَand how تُقاسُyou are compared
بِالأَنواءِwith the rain-bearing stars حَدّاin measure
And how can you be compared
You make white pearls
with the rain-bearing stars in measure,
Stream from the clouds
وَكَفُّكَwhile your hand لِلوَرىto humankind
أَدنىnearer وَأَندىand more bountiful
while your hand to humankind
And the black lines of calligraphy
is nearer and more bountiful?
Aspire to elegance
لِأَنَّbecause الغَيثَrain يُسأَلُis begged for وَهوَwhile it is حابِسwithholding
وَلَيسَand does not يَجودُgive generously إِلّاexcept وَهوَwhile it is عابِسfrowning
For rain is begged for while it holds back,
Seeking the sublime, the clouds
and gives generously only while frowning.
Become my ladder’s rungs
جَعَلتَyou made البيضَthe bright swords
دامِيَةَbloody المَآقيthe inner eye-corners
You made the bright swords
While good deeds are
bloody at their eye-corners,
What remain
وَسُمرَand the brown lances of الخَطِّal-Khatt تَرقىrise
فيinto التَراقيthe collarbones
and the brown lances of al-Khatt rise
Unhorsing the fiercely warring knight
into collarbones;
And making the unarmed man the horseman
مَساعٍendeavors لِلعُلىtoward the heights
أَضحَتhave become مَراقيstairways
efforts toward the heights
I praise my travels and state
have become stairways,
As they brought me closer to you
وَتِلكَand those الصالِحاتُrighteous deeds
هِيَthey are البَواقيthe enduring ones
and those righteous deeds
And increased my fervor
are the enduring ones.
And plight
فَتُرجِلُthus you unhorse فارِسَthe horseman of الحَربِwar المُمارِسthe seasoned one
وَتَجعَلُand you make راجِلَthe man afoot in الإِملاقِpoverty فارِسa horseman
Thus you unhorse the battle-seasoned rider,
You redoubled my hopes
and make the man afoot in poverty a horseman.
And means
حَمِدتُI expressed gratitude إِلَيكَto you
تَرحاليmy travels وَحاليand my condition
To you I have expressed gratitude for
So I tarry not with requests
my travels and my condition;
You showered me with garments of bounty
وَزادَand increased لَدَيكَwith you إِقباليmy good fortune
وَباليand my well-being
and with you my good fortune grew,
Until the parched yielded to the moist
and my well-being.
Can I claim to repay
وَقَدand indeed ضاعَفتَyou doubled آماليmy hopes
وَماليand my wealth
And you have doubled my hopes
With these lines of praise?
and my wealth,
And does reality yield
فَلَستُso I do not أُطيلُprolong
عَنon behalf of آليmy family سُؤاليmy petition
so I do not prolong
To metaphors?
my petitions on behalf of my family.
Yet extempore am I
أَفَضتَyou poured forth عَلَيَّupon me لِلنُعمىof bounty مَلابِسgarments
فَصارَso became لَدَيَّwith me رَطباًmoist كُلُّevery يابِسdry thing
You lavished upon me robes of bounty,
Moved to versify
so all that was dry became moist for me.
And where I fall short
أَأَزعُمُshall I claim? أَنَّنيthat I
بِالمَدحِwith praise جازيone who repays
Shall I claim that I
God suffices
repay you with praise?
If I strung pearls into a necklace of praise
وَهَلand can? تُجزىbe repaid
الحَقيقَةُreality بِالمَجازِwith metaphor
And can recompense be given
I'd still despair of fulfilling what is due
for reality through metaphor?
وَلَكِنbut فيin اِرتِجاليmy improvising
وَاِرتِجازيand my reciting rajaz verse
Yet in my improvising
and my chanting of rajaz verse,
إِذاif قَصَّرتُI fall short فَاللَهُthen God is
المُجازيthe one who repays
if I fall short, God is
the one who repays.
فَلَوfor even if نَظَّمتُI strung together مِنfrom مَدحيmy praise نَفائِسprecious things
فَإِنّيthen indeed I مِنof قَضاءِdischarging الحَقِّwhat is due آئِسdespairing
For even if I strung precious gems of my praise,
I would still despair of paying what is due.
