عَنِfrom التَعَبُّدِpaying homage بِالأَوراقِthrough written pages فيduring سَفَريmy journey
عَنِ التَعَبُّدِ بِالأَوراقِ في سَفَري
My lord, the vicissitudes of time distract me
My Master, the turns of fate preoccupy me
From paying homage through written pages during my journey.
From worshipping with leaves on my journey
فَكُلَّماso whenever طالَgrew long شَوقيmy longing قَصَّرَتfell short كُتُبيmy letters
فَكُلَّما طالَ شَوقي قَصَّرَت كُتُبي
وَأَيُّand what عَيبٍfault لَهاin them أَسنىmore splendid مِنَthan القِصَرِbrevity
وَأَيُّ عَيبٍ لَها أَسنى مِنَ القِصَرِ
So whenever my longing lengthens, my letters fall short.
So the more my longing grows, the shorter my books become
And what fault in them is more splendid than brevity?
Yet what fault is there in books shorter than longing?
