My friends in al-Fayha, though your absence grows long,
My friends in al-Fayha, though far away
you are as close to my heart as my lungs are to my throat.
Are ever present, deep in my heart they stay
وَإِنand if يَخلُis devoid مِنof تِكرارِrepetition of ذِكريmention of me حَديثُكُمُyour conversation

Though your talk may lack repeated mention of me,
If I cease speaking of you time and again
my verse has never lacked your praise for a single day.
My poetry of praise for you will never wane
فَوَاللَهِso by God لاnot يَشفيheals نَزيفَone intoxicated هَواكُمُby love for you

By God, nothing heals one drunk with love for you
By God, nothing can assuage my love's outpour
but the wine of fellowship from you, with which I grew drunk.
Except the wine of fellowship we shared before
أَرىI see كُلَّevery ذيsufferer from داءٍan ailment يُداوىis treated بِضَدِّهِwith its opposite

I see every sufferer treated with his ailment's opposite,
I see each sickness has a cure, a remedy
yet a man with a hangover is not cured without wine.
But nothing cures one drunk except for more drinks freely
أُطالِبُI call upon نَفسِيَmyself بِالتَصَبُّرِto exercise patience عَنكُمُaway from you
وَأَوَّلُand the first ماthing أُفقِدتُI was deprived of بَعدَكُمafter your departure صَبريmy patience
I ask my soul to endure separation from you,
I bid my soul show patience, perseverance from you abstain
and the first thing I lost after you was my patience.
Yet no sooner you left, than all my patience was in vain
فَإِنso if كانَwas عَصرُthe age of الأُنسِfellowship مِنكُمfrom you قَدِalready اِنقَضىended

فَوَالعَصرِthen by Time إِنّيindeed I بَعدَafter ذَلِكَthat فيin خُسرِloss
So if the age of fellowship with you has passed,
If the days of fellowship are gone, never more to bless
then, by Time, I am in loss after that.
Then, by God, beyond them, only loss and sorrow I confess
بَكَيتُI wept لِفَقدِfor losing الأَربَعِthe dwellings الخُضرِgreen مِنكُمfrom you

I wept for the loss of your green dwellings
For you four, once so verdant, now gone, I weep
over spacious al-Ramla, at the red dwellings.
How can this life go on, now you aren't here
فَكَيفَso how بَقِيَsurvived إِنسانُthe pupil of عَينيmy eye وَقَدand already مَضىhas passed

How has my eye's pupil survived, when there has passed
After all the years we spent so near and dear
over that little man a span of time?
Clouds from Babylon watered Saadi's garden bower

May al-Sa'di's garden in the land of Babylon be watered
Lightning smiles, raindrops weep, freshening every flower
by a cloud laughing with lightning and sobbing with rain.
'Tween Ramlat al-Zaytun and Jisr al-Hajar, in truth
وَحَيّاand may greet الحَياthe rain مَغنىًa dwelling قَضَيتُI fulfilled بِرَبعِهِin its precincts

And may the rain greet a dwelling in whose precincts I fulfilled
Many times, the winds from your land by me have passed
the duties of youth, between Ramla and the bridge.
Bearing your town's scents, each inhale unsurpassed
وَرُبَّand many a نَسيمٍbreeze مَرَّpassed ليby me مِنfrom دِيارِكُمyour homes
فَفاحَso wafted fragrantly لَناto us مِنfrom طَيِّةِa fold طَيِّبُsweet النَشرِfragrance
And many a breeze has passed my way from your homes,
Reminding me of days gone by, though I'd not forgot
and from its fold a sweet fragrance wafted to us.
Renewing memories already unforgot
وَأَذكَرَنيand it reminded me عَهداًof a past bond وَماand not كُنتُI was ناسِياًforgetful

And it reminded me of an old bond, though I had not forgotten,
My sheikh, for whom fond love within me dwelt
but this was memory renewed upon memory.
As though my very soul within your being dwelt
فَياso O أَيُّهاyou (vocative) الشَيخُsheikh الَّذيwho عَقدُthe bond of حُبِّهِhis love

So, O sheikh, the bond of whose love
Yearning pulls me to your lands, while I fear
has settled in me like the soul within my breast:
The enemy's ruses, so wary I must be
تُجاذِبُنيtug at me الأَشواقُlongings نَحوَtoward دِيارِكُمyour homes

وَأَحذَرُand I beware مِنof كَيدِthe scheming of العَدُوِّthe enemy الَّذيwho يَدريknows
longings pull me toward your homes,
Fearing sharp lies upon his tongue will flow
and I beware the plots of the enemy who knows,
Pretending friendship, while laying traps below

fearing a false-tongued man who conceals for me
I'm no reckless fool to throw my life away
kinds of ruin amid cheerfulness and smiles.
Or struggle to reclaim it, though it holds me in its sway
وَيَنثُرُand he scatters ليfor me حَبَّgrain الوَفاءِof loyalty تَمَلَّقاًin flattery

He scatters for me the grain of loyalty in flattery,
When life's meaning lies in one your heart upholds dear
and beneath it sets for me the snare of betrayal.
Wealth is like the alif in amr[i], nothing to fear
وَماand not أَناI مَنone who يُلقيcasts إِلىinto الحَتفِdeath نَفسَهُhimself

I am not one who casts himself into death
In Maridin[ii], staunch friends I claim
and then labors to wrench himself free from it by force.
Binding me fast when fate unties each other bond and claim
إِذاif كانَis ذِكرُthe renown of المَرءِa person شَيخَthe master of حَياتِهِhis life

If a man's renown is the master of his life,
Kings - when time unleashes its arsenal
then newly gained wealth is like the silent waw in 'Amr.
In each calamity, my bulwark and defence they shall

But I have companions in Mardin
However much the days spread harm and sorrow
through whom I strengthened my back when I settled there.
For every hurt, from time's injustice I shall borrow

Kings—whenever Time casts its ropes,
When I cry out, needing succor, they will heal my wounds
I make them my reserve in every calamity.
When poverty comes knocking, gifts shall surround
وَماand never أَحدَثَتinflicted أَيديthe hands of الزَمانِTime إِساءَةًharm

Never have the hands of Time inflicted harm
Their resolve is such that cruelty brings no fear
without my avenging it on Time when I came to them.
Their bounty is such, no poverty brings them near
إِذاif جِئتُهُمI came to them مُستَصرِخاًcrying for help حَقَنواthey spared دَميmy blood

If I come to them crying for help, they spare my blood,
With their open hands they've watered their fathers' sapling tree
and if I come begging, they increase my wealth.
And now in its branches, fruits of gratitude flow free

The resolve of those who fear no death when striking,
The Sultan granted me gifts, though difficult to bear
and the bounty of those who fear no poverty when giving.
Lightening my burdens, though my back they greatly wear
وَرَوَّواand they watered بِماءِwith the water of الجودِgenerosity غَرسَthe planting of أَبيهِمُtheir father

They watered their father's planting with the water of generosity,
A ruler righteous, bringing ease, relieving every plight
and the fruit of gratitude ripened upon its branches.
Hardship exchanges for ease; wrongs turn into right
وَقَلَّدَنيand he garlanded me السُلطانُthe sultan مِنهُfrom him بِأَنعُمٍwith favors

And the sultan hung his own favors about my neck,
My hands now clasp victories, life's darkness turned around
with which he eased my rising, though they weighed upon my back.
After the bitter days he came, my heart in sorrows drowned
هُوَhe الصالِحُal-Salih المَلكُthe king الَّذيwho صَلُحَتwere set right بِهِthrough him

He is al-Salih, the king through whom were set right
The endless nights and more are lost to mem'ry now
the affairs of humankind, and hardship was replaced by ease.
In days joy-filled and radiant, my life endows

Through them my palm stays open through the night, after
I pitched my tent here in lands where joy and goodness flowered
the blows of days had built my heart upon brokenness.
Were it not for him, I never would have from Egypt powered

And in place of jet-black nights and their vicissitudes I was given,
Save one, no place brought regret for where I strayed
in his presence, white-stockinged, white-blazed days.
My life I spent, though in lands that prosperity evade
حَطَطتُI set down رِحاليmy saddlebags فيin رَبيعِthe springtime of رُبوعِهِhis dwellings

I set down my saddlebags in the springtime of his dwellings,
None like Paradise, except his name[iii] and fame
and but for him, I would not have turned the reins away from my city.
Not really heaven's eternity, but the palace just the same
مَنازِلُdwellings ماnot لاقَيتُI encountered فيهاin them نَدامَةًregret

Dwellings in which I felt no regret,
A valley, though not where Layla[iv] poured out her woeful strains
except that I had spent my life elsewhere.
But streaming waters flow over rocks untouched by rains
فَلَمso not يَكُwas كَالفِردَوسِlike al-Firdaws غَيرُother than سَميّهِits namesake

Nothing was like al-Firdaws except its namesake
As if the clouds are mocking in their thunder, lighting-laced
in eternal Paradise—not the caliph's al-Khuld or the palace.
Only at his command their weeping is replaced

And a valley resembling al-Khansa—not in her sorrows,
Branches entwine, dropping curtains of leaves each dawn
but it has two eyes, springs that flow over rock—Sakhr.
Shielding the gardens in veils of emerald, verdant and fawn
كَأَنَّas though بِهِin it الجودانَal-Jawdan بِالسُحبِat the clouds شامِتٌgloating

As though al-Jawdan there gloats at the clouds:
When the sun's ropes o'er it slip off, pulled far away
for whenever they sob, it turns back with smiling lips.
Its nets of light on his gardens their sparkling jewels lay
تَعانَقَتِembraced one another الأَغصانُthe branches فيهِin it فَأَسبَلَتso let fall

The branches embraced one another there and let fall
Coffee beans from Dayr Shahlan[v] we mill and grind
over the garden curtains of green leaves.
Presided by the priests' hands, their every movement refined

When the sun's ropes slip free of them
When we imbibe its stimulant, senses delight
into its garden, they cast snares of gold.
Secrets rise to peak awareness, our thoughts take flight

Wine from the monastery of Shahlan is passed around there,
We regale with humorous tales and witty banter yet
unveiled for us by priests' hands from its bridal chamber.

Savoring life's pleasures, each moment a joyous sip
from the seat of secrets to the farthest reaches of thought,
Snatching blissful hours from fated hardship's grip

we prepare for it the relish of wit and wisdom,
In his glory, spring has blanketed us with floral cheer
and over it display the splendor of verse and prose.
At first rain, petals and buds always appear

While we give life its due in merriment,
Glorious patron, your merit beyond all measure
and steal hours of joy from our lifetime.
Eludes full enumeration, transcends words' treasure
وَقَدand indeed عَمَّناhas encompassed us فَصلُthe season of الرَبيعِspring بِفَضلِهِwith its bounty

And springtime has embraced us with its bounty,
I transmit these verses, so longing you to salute
so it hastened to us with roses at the first rainfall.
Though your august qualities no poem can compute
فَياso O أَيُّهاyou (vocative) المَولىmaster الَّذيwho وَصفُthe description of فَضلِهِhis bounty

So, O master, the description of whose bounty
Most wondrous! Though I'm awake, lucid and bright
surpasses counting, limits, and confinement:
I offer you my gems, recite my spells just right
أَبُثُّكَI confide to you بِالأَشعارِthrough verse فَرطَthe intensity of تَشَوُّقيmy longing

in verse I confide to you my intense longing,
Please, may you always favor me, your grace never sever
and do not attempt to encompass your description in poetry.
Consult your wisdom what action now is clever

And strangest of all is that, despite my vigilance
in freeing words from the snare of foul speech,
أَسوقُI bring إِلىto البَحرِthe sea الخَضَمِّvast جَواهِريmy jewels

I bring my jewels to the vast sea,
and offer some of my magic to the sons of Babylon.

So grant pardon—may my soul be your ransom—as a favor
to me, and consult your sound judgment in this matter.
