Moisten my bones with the choicest

    wine of the leafy grapevine.

And banish care with the unmixed

    draught of its clarified juice.

And do not sully it by mixing

    in your shimmering water.

And invoke protection for the cup against

water, by the Lord of daybreak.

And pass it to me, a wine

    that dispels dusk's darkness.

And ply me with drink until I see the

elephant the size of a pawn.

Golden wine, displayed by the cupbearers

    in glass of dazzling whiteness,

As though it were, within its cup,

    amber in quicksilver.

It is displayed by the hand of a young gazelle,

adorned with earrings and clad in a tunic.

The light of his face shines

    within the tunic he wears.

As though he were the sun of day

    in twilight's cloak.

He intoxicates us with his cup

    and his furtive glance:

    At times from a goblet,

    and at times from eyes.

Do you not see the new cloud

    encircling the horizon?

    Then drink to its freshness

    from our aged wine,

In the two gardens of Muhawwal

    and Basiq, and at al-Jawsaq;

For these are my desire, not the hills of

    al-Sadir and al-Khawarnaq.

And look at the orange blossom as it

    appears through the leaves,

    Like pearls with gold in

    suspended emerald.

And the flowers have spread for us

    carpets of silk brocade,

    Of red and yellow,

    and green and blue.

And the water amid the garden—some

    confined, and some flowing free;

    And the birds—some circling

    within it, and some soaring—

And the song of the nightingale, the

    blackbird, and the collared dove.

Break open the morning with the morning

    draught, before twilight's glow,

And dispel the deep darkness's gloom with

the light of its radiant gleam,

Until it shows us night's black steed

    resembling a piebald horse.

    And never worry about

    the pauper's wretched livelihood,

For I have something left over

from the bounty of the house of Artuq:

    A people whose overflowing generosity

restored the last remnants of my life.

And their favors have never ceased to be

    necklaces around my neck.

For that I make their renown shine

in the west and in the east.

And if I wished to encompass a

part of their qualities, I could not.
