الشَوقُlonging أَعظَمُgreater جُملَةًas a whole ياO سَيِّديmy lord
مِنthan أَنthat يُحَدَّbe bounded يَسيرُهُa little of it بِكِتابِin writing
Longing in its entirety, my lord, is too vast
My longing, O lord, is far greater
for even a little of it to be contained in writing.
Than can be captured in writing
وَلَواعِجُand burning pangs البُرَحاءِanguish أَعظَمُgreater كَثرَةًin number

And the burning pangs of anguish are too numerous
And the movements of the dunes are more copious
for my eloquent speech to encompass them.
Than any eloquent speech can encompass

May you never part, O pupil of my loved ones’ eyes,
Do not, O man, turn away the eyes of my beloved
from me, and O verse of the companions’ ode.
From me or the verses of my companions
لَوif لَمnot يَكُنbe شُربُdrinking الدِماءِblood مُحَرَّماًforbidden
صَيَّرتُI made بَعدَكُمُafter you الدُموعَtears شَرابيmy drink
If drinking blood were not forbidden,
If drinking blood were not forbidden
I would make tears my drink in your absence.
I would make tears my drink after you all
