إِسمَع مُخاطَبَةَ الجَليسِ وَلا تَكُن

إِسمَع مُخاطَبَةَ الجَليسِ وَلا تَكُن

عَجِلاً بِنُطقِكَ قَبلَما تَتَفَهَّمُ

عَجِلاً بِنُطقِكَ قَبلَما تَتَفَهَّمُ

Listen to your companion’s speech, and do not be

Listen to your companion's words, do not

hasty in speaking before you understand.

لَم تُعطَ مَعَ أُذُنَيكَ نُطقاً واحِداً

لَم تُعطَ مَعَ أُذُنَيكَ نُطقاً واحِداً

إِلّا لِتَسمَعَ ضِعفَ ما تَتَكَلَّمُ

إِلّا لِتَسمَعَ ضِعفَ ما تَتَكَلَّمُ

You were given, alongside your two ears, a single faculty of speech

You were not given one tongue with two ears

only so that you might listen twice as much as you speak.

Except to hear twice as much as you talk.
