فَفيهِfor within it عَلىin الوَغىbattle بَأسٌvalor شَديدُfierce
Is your heart of stone or iron?
Is your heart made of stone or iron?
For it holds fierce valor in battle.
For in it, against injustice, there is great might,
وَأَطوادٌand towering peaks حُلومُكَyour forbearance أَمor جِباكٌrocky heights (reading uncertain)
تَميدُsway الراسِياتُthe firmly rooted mountains وَلاand not تَميدُsway
And is your forbearance towering peaks or rocky heights?
Yet your patience - is it docile camels?
The firmly rooted mountains sway, but your forbearance does not.
The resolute tremble, but you do not tremble.
لِأَنَّكَbecause you كُلَّماwhenever حاولَتَyou attempted أَمراًa task
يُصَوِّبُguides aright فَعلَكَyour action الرَأيُjudgment السَديدُsound
For whenever you undertake a task,
For whenever you attempt something,
Sound judgment guides your action aright.
Your wise opinion makes your deed right.
طَلَعتَyou rose عَلىover العُداةِthe foes وَأَنتَand you are شَمسٌa sun
فَذابَso melted بِحَرِّin the heat of مَوقِعِهاits impact الجَليدُthe ice
You rose over your foes, yourself a sun,
You rose against the enemies like a sun,
So the ice melted in the heat of its impact.
So the ice melted in the heat of its position.
أَغَرتَyou raided عَلىupon حِماهِمtheir protected lands غَيرَwithout being عادٍa transgressor
وَلاقواand they encountered مِنكَfrom you ماwhat لاقَتencountered ثَمودُThamud
You raided their protected lands without transgressing,
You attacked their sanctuary, unlike others,
And they suffered at your hands what Thamud suffered,
And they met from you what Thamud met.
بِجَيشٍwith an army تَرجُفُtremble الراياتُthe banners فيهِwithin it
وَتَخفِقُand flutter دونَbefore مَقدَمِهِits advance البُنودُthe standards
With an army in which the banners tremble,
With an army in which flags tremble
And standards flutter before its advance.
And standards flutter before its vanguard.
وَتَهتَزُّand sway الذَوابِلُthe slender spears فيهِwithin it عُجباًproudly

And within it the slender spears sway in pride,
In which the banners shake in wonder,
As bodies sway in merriment.
As they shook from flags held by hands.
عَجِلتَyou hastened إِلىto قِراعِهِمُfighting them بِعَزمٍwith resolve

You hastened to fight them with a resolve
You hurried to fight them with resolve,
Through which far-off hope draws near to you.
By which distant hope comes near to you.
وَكَمand how many وانٍa laggard يَعُدُّconsiders العَجزَincapacity حِلماًforbearance
فَيَندَمُthen he regrets وَالنَدامَةُand regret لاnot تُفيدُavails
And many a laggard takes weakness for forbearance,
How often does one who counts cowardice as wisdom,
Then regrets it, though regret avails nothing.
Regret it, though regret does not benefit.
وَمَنand whoever يَرَsees ماwhat يُريدُhe wants وَكَفِّand holds back جُبناًout of cowardice

And whoever sees what he wants and holds back out of cowardice
And whoever sees what he wants and curbs cowardice,
Will afterward see what he does not want.
Will see after it what he does not want.
