فيin طَبعِكُمyour nature مَلَلٌweariness مُنافٍincompatible لِلوَفاwith loyalty
وَمِنَand among المُحالِthe impossible تَجَمُّعُthe coming together الأَضدادِopposites
In your nature lies a weariness at odds with loyalty;
And the union of opposites is impossible.
فَإِذاso when تَناءَيناwe grow distant نَكونُwe are أَحِبَّةًfriends
وَإِذاand when تَدانَيناwe draw near نَكونُwe are أَعاديenemies
So when we are far apart, we are friends;
And when we draw near, we are enemies.
فَلِذاكَso for that reason أَنّيthat I قَدindeed قَطَعتُI ceased تَرَدُّديmy repeated visits
عَنكُمfrom you وَنارُand the fire الشَوقِof longing حَشوُthe filling of فُؤاديmy heart
That is why I have ceased my visits
To you, though the fire of longing fills my heart.
وَأَرَدتُand I wished إِبقاءَto preserve المَوَدَّةِaffection بَينَناbetween us
فَرَأَيتُso I saw صُحبَتَكُمyour companionship دَوامَthe continuance of بُعاديmy distance
And I wished to preserve the affection between us;
So I saw that companionship with you meant keeping my distance.
