فيin مِثلِthe like of حُبِّكُمُlove for you لاnot يَحسُنُis fitting العَذَلُreproach
وَإِنَّماand only الناسُpeople أَعداءٌenemies لِماof what جَهِلواthey did not know
In such love as mine for you, reproach is unfitting.
In love like yours, reproach is not seemly,
People are only enemies of what they do not know.
People are but enemies of what they do not know.
رَأَواthey saw تَحَيُّرَbewilderment فِكريmy thoughts فيin صِفاتِكُمُyour qualities
فَأَوسَعواso they expanded القَولَtheir speech إِذwhen ضاقَتbecame limited بِيَfor me الحِيَلُthe means
They saw my thoughts bewildered by your qualities,
They saw my perplexed thoughts about your qualities,
So they spoke at length when my means failed me.
So they talked at length when stratagems failed me.
وَأَنَّهُمand that they عَرَفواknew فيin الحُبِّlove مَعرِفَتيmy knowledge
بِشَأنِكُمabout you عَذَرواthey excused مِنfrom بَعدِafter ماhaving عَذَلواthey reproached
Had they known, in love, what I know
Since they knew of my knowledge in love for you,
Of you, they would have excused me after reproaching me.
They excused me after reproaching.
ياO جاعِليyou who make خَبَريmy tale; my predicate بِالهَجرِthrough estrangement مُبتَدَأًa beginning; a grammatical subject
لاno عَطفَaffection; grammatical coordination فيكُمin you وَلاand no ليfor me مِنكُمُfrom you بَدَلُsubstitute; grammatical apposition
O you who make my predicate a subject through estrangement,
O you who began my news with estrangement,
There is no affection in you, nor have I any substitute for you.
No conjunction in you and no substitution for me.
رَفَعتُI raised حاليmy state وَرَفعُand raising الحالِthe state; circumstantial qualifier مُمتَنِعٌimpossible
إِلَيكُمُto you وَهوَand it لِلتَمييزِfor distinction; grammatical specification يَحتَمِلُadmits
I raised my state—though a 'state' cannot take the nominative—
I raised my state which cannot be raised,
To you; yet it admits of distinction.
To you, though it can accommodate distinction.
كَمhow often قَدindeed كَتَمتُI concealed هَواكُمlove for you لاnot أَبوحُI divulge بِهِit
وَالأَمرُand the matter يَظهَرُappears وَالأَخبارُand the tidings تَنتَقِلُtravel
How often I concealed my love for you, never divulging it,
How much have I concealed my passion for you, not divulging it,
Yet the matter comes to light, and tidings travel.
Yet the matter appears and news spreads.
وَبِتُّand I spent the night أُخفيhiding أَنينيmy moaning وَالحَنينَand longing بِكُمfor you
تَوَهُّماًimagining أَنَّthat ذاكَthat الجُرحَwound يَندَمِلُheals
I spent the night hiding my moans and longing for you,
I moan my sorrow and yearning for you in secret,
Imagining that that wound would heal.
Deluded that the wound will heal.
كَيفَhow السَبيلُthe way إِلىto إِخفاءِconcealing حُبِّكُمُlove for you
وَالقَلبُwhile the heart مُنقَلِبٌoverturned وَالعَقلُand the mind مُعتَقَلُimprisoned
How can my love for you be hidden,
What is the way to hide my love for you,
When my heart is overturned and my mind imprisoned?
When my heart is tossed about and my mind confined?
ياO مُلبِسيyou who clothe القَلبِthe heart ثَوبَthe garment الحُزنِof sorrow بَعدَهُمُafter them
حُزنيmy sorrow قَشيبٌnew and fresh وَصَبريand my patience بَعدَكُمafter you سَمِلُthreadbare
O you who clothe the heart in sorrow after their departure,
O you who clothed my heart in the garment of sorrow after them,
My sorrow is fresh, and my patience, after you, threadbare.
My sorrow is withered and my patience after you has declined.
لِذاtherefore بَواكِرُthe early mornings أَيّاميof my days لِبُعدِكُمُbecause of your distance
أَصائِلٌlate afternoons وَضُحاهاand their forenoons بَعدَكُمafter you طَفَلُdusk
Thus the mornings of my days, because you are far away,
So the dawns of my days after your absence
Are late afternoons, and their forenoons, after you, dusk.
Are tumultuous while their mornings after you are tranquil.
أَحسَنتُمُyou made gracious القَولَthe speech ليto me وَعداًas a promise وَتَكرِمَةًand as an honor
لاnot يَصدُقُproves true القَولُthe speech حَتّىuntil يَصدُرَcomes forth العَمَلُthe deed
You spoke kindly to me, with promises and honor;
You gave me your word, a promise and favor,
Words prove true only when deeds follow.
No word is believed until the deed issues.
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen وَثِقَتtrusted نَفسيmy soul بِمَوعِدِكُمin your promise
وَقُلتُand I said بُشرايَglad tidings for me زالَvanished الخَوفُfear وَالوَجَلُand dread
Until, when my soul trusted your promise,
Until my soul felt secure in your promise,
And I said, 'Good news for me! Fear and dread are gone,'
And I said 'Good tidings!' fear and anxiety vanished.
حَمَّلتُمونيyou burdened me عَلىdespite ضُعفيmy weakness لِقُوَّتِكُمbecause of your strength
مالَيسَwhat is not يَحمِلُهُborne by سَهلٌa plain وَلاnor جَبَلُa mountain
You burdened me, despite my weakness, because of your strength,
You burdened me beyond my weakness with your strength,
With what neither plain nor mountain can bear.
What neither easy nor difficult can bear.
لِلَّهِto God أَيّامُناour days وَالدارُand the dwelling دانِيَةٌnear
وَالشَملُand our company مُجتَمِعٌunited وَالجَمعُand the gathering مُشتَمِلُall-embracing
To God belong our days, when the dwelling was near,
Our days belong to God, and the abode is finite,
And our company was united, our gathering embracing all.
The community united and the gathering brought together.
شَفَيتُI quenched غُلَّةَthe thirst قَلبيof my heart وَالغَليلَand burning yearning بِهاtherein
فَاليَومَso today لاneither غُلَّتيmy thirst تَشفىis relieved وَلاnor الغَلَلُburning thirsts
There I quenched my heart's thirst and burning yearning;
I revealed the bitterness of my heart and the sorrow in it,
Today neither my thirst nor burning yearning is eased.
So today my bitterness is not cured nor the sorrows.
ياO حَبَّذاhow lovely نَسمَةُthe breeze السَعدِيِّof al-Sa'di حينَwhen سَرَتit travelled by night
مَريضَةًailing فيin حَواشيthe edges مِرطِهاof its mantle بَلَلُdampness
Ah, how lovely the breeze of al-Sa'di when it drifted by night,
Blessed was the breath of well-being when it blew,
Ailing, with dampness along the edges of its mantle.
Sickly in the margins of her veil, wet.
لاmay not أَوحَشَleave bereft اللَهُGod مِنof قَومٍa people لِبُعدِهِمُbecause of their distance
أَمسَيتُI have come to أَحسُدُenvy مَنwhoever بِالغَمضِwith sleep يَكتَحِلُlines his eyes with kohl
May God never leave me bereft of a people whose distance
May God not make desolate a people after their absence!
Has made me envy whoever lines his eyes with sleep.
I have come to envy whoever can use kohl.
غابواthey vanished وَأَلحاظُand the glances أَفكاريof my thoughts تُمَثِّلُهُمportray them
لِأَنَّهُمbecause they فيin ضَميرِthe innermost recess القَلبِof the heart قَدalready نَزَلواhave settled
They vanished, yet the glances of my thoughts portray them,
They left while my glances represent them
For they have settled in the heart's hidden depths.
Because they have settled in the conscience of my heart.
سارواthey departed وَقَدand already قَتَلونيthey killed me بَعدَهُمin their absence أَسفاًwith grief
ياO لَيتَهُمif only they أَسَرواhad taken captive فيin الرَكبِthe caravan مَنthe one whom قَتَلواthey killed
They departed, having killed me with grief in their absence;
They traveled and so after them have slain me in sorrow,
If only they had taken captive in the caravan the one they killed!
Would that they had taken along the slain with the riders!
وَخَلَّفونيand they left me أَعُضُّbiting الكَفَّthe hand مِنfrom نَدَمٍregret
وَأَكثِرُand I increase النَوحَlamentation لَمّاwhen قَلَّتِbecame few الحِيَلُthe means
They left me biting my hand in regret,
And left me clenching my palms in regret
And increasing my lamentation when my means grew few.
And crying copiously when stratagems diminished.
أَقولُI say فيin إِثرِهِمtheir wake وَالعَينُwhile the eye دامِيَةٌis bleeding
وَالدَمعُand the tears مُنهَمِرٌpouring مِنهاfrom it وَمُنهَمِلُand streaming
I say in their wake, my eye bleeding,
I say in their wake while my eyes shed blood
And tears pouring from it and streaming down:
And tears pour relentlessly from them.
ماnot عَوَّدونيthey accustomed me أَحِبّائيmy loved ones مُقاطَعَةًto estrangement
بَلrather عَوَّدونيthey accustomed me إِذاwhenever قاطَعتُهُمI broke with them وَصَلواthey renewed the bond
My loved ones never accustomed me to estrangement;
My loved ones have not accustomed me to being cut off,
Rather, they taught me: whenever I broke with them, they rejoined me.
Rather, they accustomed me that if I cut them off, they join me.
وُسِرتُand I travelled فيin إِثرِهُمtheir wake حَيرانَbewildered مُرتَمِضاًburning with pain
وَالعيسُand the pale camels مِنfrom طَلِّهاtheir dew تَحفىgo barefoot وَتَنتَعِلُand become shod
And I travelled in their wake, bewildered and burning,
I walked in their track, wandering and searching,
While the pale camels, from their dew, go barefoot and shod.
While the night birds from craving sing and trill.
تُريكَshow you مَشيَthe gait الهُوَيناof leisurely movement وَهيَwhile they مُسرِعَةٌare swift
مَرَّthe passage السَحابَةِof the cloud لاneither رَيثٌdelay وَلاnor عَجَلُhaste
They show you a leisurely gait, though they move swiftly,
You see the gait of theTracking feminine; she strides
Like the passage of a cloud, neither slow nor hurried.
Past clouds unhurriedly and unrestrained.
لاdo not تَنسِبَنَّever ascribe إِلىto الغِربانِthe crows بَينَهُمُtheir parting
فَذاكَfor that بَينَis a parting غَدَتbecame غِربانُهُits crows الإِبِلُthe camels
Never ascribe their parting to the crows;
Do not attribute to the mid-morning the separation between them
For this is a parting whose crows have become the camels.
For those became mid-morning when their camels were stabled.
وَفيand in الهَوادِجِthe howdahs أَقمارٌmoons مُحَجَّبَةٌveiled
أَغَرَّةٌinnocent young ones حَمَلَتهاcarried them الأَينُقُthe she-camels الذَلُلُdocile
And in the howdahs are veiled moons,
In howdahs are concealed moons,
Innocent young ones borne by docile she-camels.
Bashful, carried by the docile, submissive.
تِلكَthose البُروجُthe towers; zodiacal houses الَّتيwhich حَلَّتsettled بُدورُهُمُtheir full moons
فيهاwithin them وَلَيسَand there is not بِهاin them ثَورٌTaurus; a bull وَلاnor حَمَلُAries; a ram
Those are the towers where their full moons have settled;
Those are the constellations where they lodged,
Within them, there is neither Taurus nor Aries.
In them, not Taurus or Aries.
وَحَجَّتِand approached (wording uncertain) العيسَthe pale camels حادٍa camel-driver صَوتُهُhis voice غَرِدٌmelodious
بِنَغمَةٍwith a melody دونَهاinferior to it المَزمومُal-Mazmum (musical form) وَالرَمَلُand al-Ramal (musical form)
And a driver with a melodious voice approached the pale camels,
The night birds' dispute with ringing, warbling voice,
With a melody beside which al-Mazmum and al-Ramal fall short.
Below it are the twittering and the chirping.
حَداhe sang to urge onward بِهِمthem ثُمَّthen حَيّاhe greeted عيسَهُمtheir pale camels مَرَحاًjoyfully
وَقالَand he said سِرgo مُسرِعاًswiftly حُيّيتَmay you be greeted ياجَمَلُO camel
He sang them onward, then joyfully greeted their pale camels,
It greeted them then bid their night birds goodbye playfully,
And said, 'Go swiftly! Greetings to you, O camel!'
Saying, "Farewell, O camel!" merrily.
لَيتَif only التَحَيَّةَthe greeting كاhad been (first fragment) نَتhad been (second fragment) ليfor me فَأَشكُرَهاso I may be thankful for it
مَكانَin place of ياO جَمَلٌcamel حُيِّتَmay you be greeted ياO رَجُلُman
If only that greeting had been mine, so I might give thanks for it,
Would that the greeting had been for me to thank him
Instead of 'O camel': 'Greetings to you, O man!'
Instead of "Fare well, O camel!" "Fare well, O man!"
