لَئِنif indeed سَمَحَgranted الزَمانُtime لَناto us بُقُربٍwith nearness
نَشَرتُI would unfold لَدَيكَbefore you ماwhat فيin طَيِّthe folds of كُتبيmy letters
If time should grant us nearness,
I would unfold before you what lies folded in my letters,
وَقُمتُand I would stand مَعَwith المَقالِspeech مَقامَa stance of عَتبٍreproach
تَوَهَّمَهُmistook it for الأَنامُpeople مَجالَa field of حَربِwar
and, with my words, take a stand of reproach
that people would mistake for a battlefield.
أَياO مَنyou who غابَwere absent عَنfrom عَينيmy sight وَلَكِنand yet
أَقامَsettled مُخَيَّماًencamped فيin رَبعِthe abode of قَلبيmy heart
O you who are absent from my sight, yet
have pitched your camp in the abode of my heart.
عَهِدتُكَI knew you زائِريmy visitor مِنfrom غَيرِother than وَعدٍan appointment
فَكَيفَhow then هَجَرتَنيyou forsook me مِنfrom غَيرِother than ذَنبِwrongdoing
I knew you to visit me without an appointment;
how, then, have you forsaken me without any fault of mine?
فَإِنso if تَكُyou are راضِياًcontent بِدَوامِwith the continuance of سُخطيmy discontent
وَإِنand if تَكُyou are واجِداًfinding رَوحاًrelief بِكَربيin my anguish
So if you are content with my lasting discontent,
and if you find relief in my anguish,
فَحَسبيthen enough for me أَنَّنيthat I بِرِضاكَwith your contentment راضٍam content
وَحَسبيand enough for me أَنthat أَبيتَI pass the night وَأَنتَwhile you حَسبيare enough for me
then it is enough for me that I am content with your contentment,
and enough for me to pass the night while you are all I need.
