إِن يَحبِسوكَ فَإِنَّ جودَكَ سائِرٌ

إِن يَحبِسوكَ فَإِنَّ جودَكَ سائِرٌ

أَو قَيَّدوكَ فَإِنَّ ذِكرَكَ مُطلَقُ

أَو قَيَّدوكَ فَإِنَّ ذِكرَكَ مُطلَقُ

If they imprison you, your generosity travels on;

Or if they shackle you, your renown is unbound.

وَالمِسكُ يُخزَنُ في الوِعاءِ وَنَشرُه

وَالمِسكُ يُخزَنُ في الوِعاءِ وَنَشرُه

أَبَداً بِأَفنِيَةِ المَنازِلِ يَعبَقُ

أَبَداً بِأَفنِيَةِ المَنازِلِ يَعبَقُ

And musk is stored in a vessel, yet its fragrance

Forever wafts through the courtyards of homes.

وَكَذاكَ كُلُّ نَفيسِ دُرٍّ لَم يَزَل

وَكَذاكَ كُلُّ نَفيسِ دُرٍّ لَم يَزَل

مِن دونِهِ لِلخَزنِ بابٌ مُغلَقُ

مِن دونِهِ لِلخَزنِ بابٌ مُغلَقُ

And likewise, every precious pearl has always had

A locked door before it for safekeeping.

وَالحَليُ في كُلِّ المَواطِنِ زينَةٌ

وَالحَليُ في كُلِّ المَواطِنِ زينَةٌ

شَتّانَ جيدٌ عاطِلٌ وَمُطَوَّقُ

شَتّانَ جيدٌ عاطِلٌ وَمُطَوَّقُ

And jewelry is an adornment in every place;

How different a bare neck and one adorned with a necklace!
