I would ransom a gazelle of the house of Layth;
I ransom a gazelle from the family of lions
Beauty's reign is wholly his.
The fate of beauty has been completed for him

His glances do to my heart
His glances do to my heart
What the lion does to the gazelle.
What a lion does to a gazelle

With an eyebrow drawn under well-connected hair
Radiant and adorned with beauty—
Illuminated with the state of beauty

As though the hands of the youth of Hilāl
As if the hands of a crescent moon young man
Had traced a nūn upon a crescent.
Dripped a noon on a crescent moon

O you who resemble the full moon when it appears,
O you who resemble the full moon when it rises
In radiance, remoteness, and perfection:
In light, remoteness and perfection

And every moment at a governor's door.
And every moment at the door of a governor
كَيفَhow أَتَواthey delivered بِالسِياطِwith whips ضَرباًblows
مِنfrom فَوقِabove أَردافِكَyour buttocks الثِقالِheavy
How could they deliver blows with whips
How did they bring whips to strike
Upon your heavy buttocks?
From over your heavy hips
فَأَثَرواand so they left فَوقَهاupon them رُسوماًmarks
كَأَنَّهاas though they were الطُرُقُthe paths فيin الجِبالِthe mountains
And so they left marks upon them,
So they left marks above them
As though they were paths in the mountains.
As if they were the roads in the mountains
