بِغَيرِ وِدادِكَ لَم أَقنَعِ

بِغَيرِ وِدادِكَ لَم أَقنَعِ

وَفي غَيرِ قُربِكَ لَم أَطمَعِ

وَفي غَيرِ قُربِكَ لَم أَطمَعِ

I was not content with anything but your affection.

Without your love I'm not content

And I hoped for nothing but nearness to you.

And without your nearness, I've no hope

وَأَنتَ الَّذي ما اِدَّعى فَضلَهُ

وَأَنتَ الَّذي ما اِدَّعى فَضلَهُ

وَكَذَّبَ في وَصفِهِ المُدَّعي

وَكَذَّبَ في وَصفِهِ المُدَّعي

And you are one whose merit no claimant has asserted

You are the one whose merit none can claim

And lied in describing you.

And whose praise the pretenders falsify

وَكَم قَد هَفَوتَ بِهُجرِ الكَلامِ

وَكَم قَد هَفَوتَ بِهُجرِ الكَلامِ

فَأَعرَضتُ عَن سَمعِهِ مِسمَعي

فَأَعرَضتُ عَن سَمعِهِ مِسمَعي

And how often you have slipped into foul speech!

How often has your silence pained me

So I turned my ear away from hearing it.

That I've shut my hearing from your words

فَكُنتَ كَأَنَّكَ ما قُلتَهُ

فَكُنتَ كَأَنَّكَ ما قُلتَهُ

وَكُنتُ كَأَنِّيَ لَم أَسمَعِ

وَكُنتُ كَأَنِّيَ لَم أَسمَعِ

So you were as though you had not said it,

So you become as though you'd never spoken

And I was as though I had not heard.
