I thanked my God when He afflicted the one I love

With love for a beautiful one who deals unfairly in love.

He makes him drink suffering many times greater than mine,

And makes him waste away through separation from him, and destroys him.

Thus he was led where he had led others in love,

And was lent the anguish he once used to lend.

So he became the one robbed, though he had been the robber:

Thus, in sorrow he is Jacob, and in beauty, Joseph.
