I have a mare who is not grateful; rather,

she is our byword for biting and kicking.

When she bolts with me through the estates of Dabarrash,

there is no reining her in except at Jawa Fars.

She runs riot in the morning at the light,

and shies in the evenings at the sun's red glow.

Oh, if only she shied away from her fodder,

as she recoils from sounds and her own kind!

For if she drank a fals's worth from Hatim's palm,

he would regret the loss of that fals.

And if she went forth in a host with Antar astride her,

he would be felled, and the armies of Banu Abs would be routed.
