أُجَرَّدُI am stripped bare كَيso that أُجَرَّدَI may unsheathe سَيفَthe sword of مَدحيmy praise
فَيَنبوso it recoils عَنfrom سِواكَanyone other than you بِهِwith it لِسانيmy tongue
I am stripped bare, so that I may unsheathe the sword of my praise;
I strive to unsheathe my sword of praise
So with it my tongue recoils from anyone but you.
That my tongue may speak of none but you
وَأَنظِمُand I compose verse مَدحَpraise of غَيرِكَsomeone other than you وَالقَوافيand the rhymes
تَعَضُّbite عَلَيَّat me أَطرافَthe tips of البَنانِthe fingers
And I compose praise of someone other than you, while the rhymes
And versify others’ glory though verse
Bite their fingertips in anger at me.
Pricks my fingertips like thorns do
فَأُظهِرُso I show حَيرَةًbewilderment فيin بَسطِsetting forth عُذريmy excuse
وَأُخفيand I conceal ماwhat يُجِنُّkeeps hidden لَكُمُfor you (plural) جَنانيmy heart
So I show bewilderment in setting forth my excuse,
So I feign bewilderment in my excuse
And conceal what my heart keeps hidden for you.
And hide what agonizes my soul
فَإِنfor if أَفعَلI act تَأَلَّمَتِsuffer المَعاليthe lofty virtues

For if I act, lofty virtues suffer;
If I do, glory is pained, if I don’t
And if I shrink back, the meanings complain of injustice.
Meaning itself feels my heart grow cold
