كَم عَكَفنا عَلى المُدامَةِ يَوماً

كَم عَكَفنا عَلى المُدامَةِ يَوماً

إِذ دَعانا إِلى المَسَرَّةِ داعِ

إِذ دَعانا إِلى المَسَرَّةِ داعِ

How many a day we devoted ourselves to wine,

How long did we indulge in wine one day

when a caller summoned us to joy;

When a summoner summoned us to cheerfulness

وَخَلونا بِها بِإِخوانِ صِدقٍ

وَخَلونا بِها بِإِخوانِ صِدقٍ

رُؤَساءِ الحَديثِ وَالاِستِماعِ

رُؤَساءِ الحَديثِ وَالاِستِماعِ

and we withdrew with it, with true companions,

And we met with pure-hearted friends

masters of conversation and listening.

وَاِلتَزَمنا شُروطَها وَاِتَّبَعنا

وَاِلتَزَمنا شُروطَها وَاِتَّبَعنا

أَدَبَ الإِفتِراقِ وَالإِجتِماعِ

أَدَبَ الإِفتِراقِ وَالإِجتِماعِ

And we observed its rules and followed

We committed to its conditions and followed

the etiquette of parting and gathering.

فَاِجتَمَعنا لَها عَلى غَيرِ وَعدٍ

فَاِجتَمَعنا لَها عَلى غَيرِ وَعدٍ

وَاِفتِرَقنا عَنها بِغَيرِ وَداعِ

وَاِفتِرَقنا عَنها بِغَيرِ وَداعِ

So we gathered for it without prior arrangement,

We gathered for it without promising

and parted from it without farewell.

And parted from it without bidding farewell
