How lovely is the land of Mardin, and the kindly

shade within it, and its water and its air!

A town that brings forth the noble—may I never taste

their death, nor be deprived of its precincts!

For it is a land that, if not the very

soul within me, is surely what that soul desires.

It has gathered all that one could wish; and so

no man of reason has come to it without becoming bewildered.

How many have we seen, belonging to it, within it, and from it—

figures whose very effigies shed blood!

If I could spend my life there—

all of it—I would dwell nowhere else.
