جاءَhe came فيin قَدِّهِhis figure اِعتِدالٌperfect proportion
مُهَفهَفٌslender-waisted ماnot لَهُfor him عَديلُan equal
He came, his figure perfectly proportioned—
slender-waisted, without an equal.
قَدalready خَفَّفَتhad lightened عِطفَهُhis waist شَمالٌa north wind
وَثَقَّلَتand had made heavy جَفنَهُhis eyelid شَمولُwine
A north wind had lent his waist lightness,
and wine had made his eyelid heavy.
ثُمَّthen اِنثَنىhe swayed راقِصاًdancing بِقَدٍّwith a figure
تُثنىare drawn إِلىtoward نَحوِهِits direction العُقولُminds
Then he swayed in dance, with a figure
toward which minds are drawn.
يَجولُhe moves about ماthe space بَينَناamong us بِوَجهٍwith a face
فيهِin it مِياهُwaters الحَياrain تَجولُswirl
He moves among us with a face
in which the waters of rain swirl.
وَرَنَّحَand set swaying الرَوضُthe garden مِنهُof him عِطفاًa waist
حَفَّsurrounded بِهِaround it اللُطفُgrace وَالدُخولُand inward taper
And the garden set his waist swaying,
enfolded in grace and inward taper.
فَعِطفُهُso his waist داخِلٌcurving inward خَفيفٌlight
وَرَدفُهُand his rump خارِجٌjutting outward ثَقيلُheavy
So his waist curves inward, light,
and his rump juts outward, heavy.
