وَلِلنَفسِ مِنهُ غايَةُ القَبضِ وَالثَقلِ

وَلِلنَفسِ مِنهُ غايَةُ القَبضِ وَالثَقلِ

Drinking wine before eating harms the body;

Drinking wine before eating

And it brings the soul extreme dejection and heaviness.

Weighs down the body and clouds the mind

كُلوا وَاِشرَبوا أَمرٌ بِتَرتيبِ شُربِها

كُلوا وَاِشرَبوا أَمرٌ بِتَرتيبِ شُربِها

وَلا تَشرَبوا الصَهباءَ إِلّا عَلى أَكلِ

وَلا تَشرَبوا الصَهباءَ إِلّا عَلى أَكلِ

“Eat and drink” is a command prescribing the order of drinking it;

"Eat and drink," the order's clear enough-

And do not drink tawny wine except after eating.
