فَوَاللَهِSo, by God ماnot اِشتَقتُI longed for الحِمىthe protected grounds لِحَدائِقٍfor gardens
فَوَاللَهِ ما اِشتَقتُ الحِمى لِحَدائِقٍ
بِهاin them الدَوحُthe great trees يَزهىis resplendent غُصنُهُits bough وَوَريقُهُand its leaves
بِها الدَوحُ يَزهى غُصنُهُ وَوَريقُهُ
By God, I did not long for al-Ḥimā for its gardens,
So, by God, it was not for gardens that I longed for the protected grounds,
where the great trees glory in their boughs and tender leaves.
Where the great trees’ boughs and leaves are resplendent.
بَلِrather اِشتَقتُI longed لَمّاwhen قيلَit was said إِنَّكَindeed you بِالحِمىin the protected grounds
بَلِ اِشتَقتُ لَمّا قيلَ إِنَّكَ بِالحِمى
وَمَنand who ذاthat one الَّذيwho ذِكرُmention of الحِمىthe protected grounds لاdoes not يَشوقُهُstir him to longing
وَمَن ذا الَّذي ذِكرُ الحِمى لا يَشوقُهُ
Rather, I longed when it was said that you were in al-Ḥimā—
Rather, I longed when it was said that you were in the protected grounds.
and who is there whom the mention of al-Ḥimā does not stir with longing?
And who is there whom mention of the protected grounds does not stir to longing?
