لِدواbeget children لِلمَوتِfor death وَاِبنواand build لِلخَرابِfor ruin
لِدوا لِلمَوتِ وَاِبنوا لِلخَرابِ
فَماfor whatever فَوقَabove التُرابِthe dust إِلىto التُرابِthe dust
فَما فَوقَ التُرابِ إِلى التُرابِ
Beget for death, and build for ruin.
For all above the dust returns to dust.
كَذَلِكَthus قالَsaid خَيرُthe best of الخَلقِcreation طُرّاًall together
كَذَلِكَ قالَ خَيرُ الخَلقِ طُرّاً
رَسولُthe Messenger of اللَهِGod ذوpossessor of الأَمرِthe command المُجابِheeded
رَسولُ اللَهِ ذو الأَمرِ المُجابِ
Thus spoke the best of all creation,
God's Messenger, whose command is heeded.
فَمَرجِعُfor the return of كُلِّevery حَيٍliving being لِلمَناياto death
فَمَرجِعُ كُلِّ حَيٍ لِلمَنايا
وَغايَةُand the end of كُلِّevery مُلكٍkingdom لِلذَهابِto passing away
وَغايَةُ كُلِّ مُلكٍ لِلذَهابِ
For every living being returns to death,
And every kingdom's end is to pass away.
بَنوthe children of الدُنياthis world فَرائِسُprey لِلمَناياto death
بَنو الدُنيا فَرائِسُ لِلمَنايا
وَنابُand the fang of المَوتِdeath عَنهاaway from them غَيرُnot نابِturning aside
وَنابُ المَوتِ عَنها غَيرُ نابِ
The children of this world are prey to death,
And death's fang never turns aside from them.
وَمَنand whoever يَغتَرُّis beguiled فيin الدُنياthis world بِعَيشٍby life
وَمَن يَغتَرُّ في الدُنيا بِعَيشٍ
فَقَدطَلَبَthen has indeed sought الشَرابَdrink مِنَfrom السَرابِthe mirage
فَقَدطَلَبَ الشَرابَ مِنَ السَرابِ
And whoever is beguiled by life in this world
Has indeed sought a drink from a mirage.
دَعاsummoned اِبنَكَyour son لِلرَدىto death مَنthe one who لَيسَis not يُعصىdisobeyed
دَعا اِبنَكَ لِلرَدى مَن لَيسَ يُعصى
وَداعيand the herald of المَوتِdeath مَمنوعُdenied الجَوابِa reply
وَداعي المَوتِ مَمنوعُ الجَوابِ
He whom none can disobey has summoned your son to death,
And death's herald admits no reply.
أَراناhas shown us فَقدُهُthe loss of him الأَيّامَthe days سوداًblack
أَرانا فَقدُهُ الأَيّامَ سوداً
وَناديand the gathering-place of الأُنسِfellowship مُغبَرَّdust-covered الجَنابِthe precincts
وَنادي الأُنسِ مُغبَرَّ الجَنابِ
His loss has made us see the days as black,
And the gathering-place of fellowship, its precincts dust-covered.
وَماand no طيبُsweetness of الحَياةِlife بِغَيرِwithout بِشرٍcheerfulness
وَما طيبُ الحَياةِ بِغَيرِ بِشرٍ
وَلاnor حُسنُbeauty of السَماءِthe sky بِلاwithout شِهابِa shooting star
وَلا حُسنُ السَماءِ بِلا شِهابِ
And life has no sweetness without cheer,
Nor the sky beauty without a shooting star.
فَلُذso seek refuge بِالصَبرِin patience فيin اللَأئيhardship وَأَحسِنand do well
فَلُذ بِالصَبرِ في اللَأئي وَأَحسِن
عَزاءَكَyour bearing of grief وَاِغتَنِمand seize حُسنَthe excellence of الثَوابِthe reward
عَزاءَكَ وَاِغتَنِم حُسنَ الثَوابِ
So seek refuge in patience amid hardship, and show grace
In your mourning, and reap a fine reward.
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you مِنof أُناسٍa people لَيسَis not يَخفىhidden
فَإِنَّكَ مِن أُناسٍ لَيسَ يَخفى
عَلىfrom آرائِهِمtheir judgments وُجهُthe face of الصَوابِwhat is right
عَلى آرائِهِم وُجهُ الصَوابِ
For you are of a people who never fail to discern
In their judgments, the face of what is right.
